“Why are you upset with me?”

“I’m not.”

He let out an exasperated sigh as he leaned his head against the headrest. This shit right here is why he didn’t do relationships.

Except this isn’t a relationship.

He turned to face her again, this time, his voice and expression were stern.

“You will tell me right now what is wrong, or you will stop passive-aggressively acting like something is wrong.”

She stubbornly remained quiet.

Okay, the direct approach didn’t work, and the hard-ass tactic didn’t work…

He reached over and tenderly stroked her cheek. “Little bee, tell me what’s bothering you.”

Her eyes looked down at her lap, and in a quiet voice, she finally said, “You didn’t put my collar back on.”

She wanted to wear his collar?

The tension in his body he hadn’t even realized he was holding, instantly dissipated and he felt his shoulders relax as he leaned forward and kissed her forehead.

“Oh, baby. I’m sorry. I just forgot.”

She finally met his eyes and hers were brimming with tears. “But we’d been talking about it and everything.”

He tried not to smile, lest she think he was laughing at her and not the situation.

“I don’t know if you remember, honey, but you were also sitting next to me naked. I was having a hard time thinking about anything other than sucking on your tits.”

That garnered a giggle from her.

“You were just so adamant about the rules yesterday. I guess I made it out to be a bigger deal than maybe it is. You don’t know how I agonized about what to do last night. And if you wouldn’t have said I couldn’t put it back on myself, it would have been an easy fix.”

“You’re right—you don’t have permission to put it back on yourself, but I’m glad you took it off when you couldn’t sleep.”

“I know that now. I thought for sure you were going to be angry.”

“I think the only way you’d make me angry is if you lied to me again. Or disappeared, which fortunately, I have the courts on my side now to help should that happen again.”

“I don’t have a reason to disappear again.”

While he understood her reason for ghosting him before, at the time it had infuriated him. Especially when he’d caved and shown up at her apartment, only to have an old Asian dude answer her door and tell Liam he’d just moved in and had no idea where the previous tenant went.

That’s when he knew he wasn’t going to find her.

Fortunately, the government, with better tracking abilities than he had available, had intervened. Of course, at the time, he didn’t know they were looking for the same person.

Fate could be funny like that.

“Since you don’t have your collar on, I’m going to let your insolence slide.”

“I don’t have a reason to disappear again, Sir.”

Liam chuckled as he tapped her nose. “Nice try, honeybee. You know that’s not what I meant. But I appreciate you correcting yourself just now, but you should have said something instead of acting passive-aggressively.”

He put his seat belt back on, and she did the same, before he pulled into traffic and headed back the way they came.
