“I doubt it. He was pretty adamant.”

“I have learned never say never. And when he changes his mind, just remember I called it. So, even though Dakota’s your sister, I get to be maid of honor at your wedding.”

“Annnnyway… I was just calling to let you know I’m okay, and to thank you for bringing my things from your parents’ cottage. I was also hoping you’d want to have lunch this week.”

“I can’t believe you’re going to be working at the hospital for free. For four months!”

“Again, it’s better than being locked up.”

“That’s true, but how are you supposed to survive without making any money? I can loan you some to tide you over. I mean, you won’t even be able to eat in the cafeteria at lunch without at least a little money.”

“Liam is getting me a credit card. And I’m sure if I needed money, he’d give me some.”

“Ohhh,” Amy crowed. “I bet Miss Independent hates that…”

“I don’t love it, but it’s only for four months.”

The pasta had been boiling long enough, and Utah shut the burner off. “Dinner is almost ready, and I need to set the table. So, lunch this week?”

“I’m available any day. Just let me know what works best for you.”

“Okay, I’ll text you next week when I have a better idea of what my days will look like.”

“Have a great night, friend. I love you, and I’m glad Liam is treating you well.”

“He really is, and I love you, too.”

“We’ll talk this week.”

After Utah agreed, she ended the call. As soon as she did, Liam walked into the kitchen, causing her to jump with a start.

“Oh, you scared me!”

“I’m sorry, baby.” He came to where she stood at the stove and lifted the lid of the pot containing the sauce. “This smells delicious.” He replaced the lid and casually asked, “Who were you talking to?”

Maybe a little too casually, and she was instantly suspicious.

“My friend, Amy.” She studied his face for a reaction but didn’t get any, so she cautiously asked, “That’s okay, isn’t it? There was nothing in the rules about me having to ask for permission to call my friends.”

“No, honey. You can talk to whoever you want. Within reason.”

“Within reason?” she asked as she pulled plates from the cupboard. “What does that mean?”

He took the plates from her and set them on the table. “I’m not a jealous man, but I won’t tolerate you talking to another man you’re not related to.”

She set the silverware she’d fished out of the drawer on the table and wrapped her arms around him in a hug. “You don’t have to worry about that, Sir. I know I belong to you.”

“For the next four months, anyway.”

Thank you for the reminder.

Utah released her hold on him and picked up the utensils while she agreed, “For the next four months.”

Liam

He’d been in his office when he heard Utah’s voice coming from the kitchen where she’d been making dinner. At first, he’d thought maybe she’d called for him.
