“Yeah?” His big, calloused hands massage my back.

“I can’t have sex with you right now,” I say, ready for hostility.

He kisses my temple. “No problem.”

And with that, I breathe easier. However, when I try to sit back up, he still holds me close. He slowly lays down on the seats, bringing me to lie on top of him.

“Comfortable?” he chuckles.

“Not really,” I giggle back. “I’m afraid I’ll hurt you.”

“I’m more than capable of handling you, Emily Mitchell.”

He runs his fingers through my hair and doesn’t say another word. All I feel is his hand moving in my hair, and his chest moving up and down to the sound of his breathing.

Before I realize it, I’ve fallen asleep to the sound of his heartbeats.

Only in the early morning hours do I wake up, with the sun timidly painting the sky with the first orange rays of the day. I need to go, but how do I leave without waking Andrew up?

I slowly get up off him and I breathe sigh of relief when nothing happens. On tiptoes, I head for the door and twist the handle. I’m ready to scram, but then I hear Andrew’s voice.

“Where are you going?” His words are heavy with sleep.

“Alissa will have way too many questions if she wakes up and I’m not there,” I explain, ready to leave.

“I bet she already has a lot of questions about you not going back home last night,” he says, sitting up.

I shrug. “I gotta go.”

“No, wait.” He reaches for me with his hand, and yawns so loud I think there’s a lion in here. “I’ll take you home.”

“No, no. I can call a car,” I say. “You finish sleeping in a proper bed. That couch must have ruined your back, and you need to bring your best game.”

“I couldn’t move. You looked so lovely.” Andrew rubs his eyes and then yawns again. “But since you’re going, can I stay in touch with you?”

I have my back turned to him, and I can’t help but smile like a fool when he says that. I’m all giddy that he’s giving me so much attention, but I don’t want him to know that. At least, not yet.

“I’ll reach out first, okay?” I respond, acting aloof.

He groans but looks at me with determination and nods. “How long will that take?”

“Maybe tomorrow. Maybe never,” I shrug. “Who knows?”

I close the door behind me and leave the building, unable to hide my smile and a skip in my step.

Chapter Seven

ANDREW

“So, today is Monday.” I nudge my father in the ribs.

“What of it?” he shrugs.

“We got here last Sunday, right?” I start to count on my fingers. “Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday you arrived late, and then Saturday you spent all night out. Then yesterday, you stayed in again. You got me feeling like a parent worried about their teenage kid. You alright, dad?”

He sighs. “Can’t I live a little? I’ve been trying out online dating, but I haven’t met the one yet. Sometimes I just go out on my own and try to meet people that way.”

“Should I expect this routine all week?” I joke.
