He just waves me off and goes back to paying attention to the realtor. She’s a beautiful woman, but way out of his league.

“Here you go,” she says, walking back over to us and handing me the clipboard with the papers she was organizing. “You can read and sign it right now.”

I look around me. We’re in the empty living room of a single-story manor, just the way I like it. I am not the biggest fan of stairs.

Kids would be able to run around here without a hitch.

I jerk my head up at the thought.

Kids? Where did that come from?

I cough then say, “I should take this to a lawyer.” I flip through the papers and continue, “But I do really like this house.”

“Shouldn’t we call Terry?” Dad asks, trying to be prudent.

The truth is that he is excited to see me closing the deal too. I can tell that he also loves the place.

I nod, handing dad the clipboard and reaching for my phone.

“Lucia, right? How long have you been working in real estate?”

I bite my lip to keep from smiling when I hear dad trying to flirt with her.

Terry’s phone rings several times. Just for once I would love for him to pick up within the first five rings.

“Andrew!” Finally, he picks up, full of forced cheer. “How can I help you, my golden boy?”

“Um… listen.” I speak in hushed tones, so Lucia won’t hear me. “I’m about to buy a house and I don’t fully trust this agency dad put us in contact with. Can you take a look at the contract?”

“No,” he immediately says, making me feel like he just dumped a bucket of cold water all over me. “But your lawyer can. I’ll have him take a look at it. Do you have a digital copy?”

“I’ll take a picture of it.” I head back to take the contract from dad.

“I’ll be waiting.” Terry pauses for a second. “How soon do you need it?”

“I’m with the realtor right now, man.”

“Alright, send it to me and I will have it taken care of.” He hangs up.

I take the papers from dad and head to a corner to photograph them. Dad and Lucia are still animatedly chatting when I come back.

“My lawyer will take a look at it. Shouldn’t take long,” I say with a polite smile.

“Sounds good,” Lucia nods. “I have some calls to make. I can leave you two here if you want to take another look around?”

Dad and I look at each other and nod. I start to walk, and dad follows me around the house. We stroll through the main bedroom’s hallway into the master suite, and I launch myself onto the huge bed.

“What do you say, dad?” I say, lying on my side. “Would you raise your family in a house like this?”

Dad cracks his knuckles as he considers my question. “Eh, I raised my family in a house four to six times smaller than this, and you all turned out alright.”

“Been talking to Tony?” I ask.

Tony is my older brother, a Navy Admiral currently stationed out of the country.

When he moved, we tried to keep in touch, but we were never really that close to begin with. Right now, with the time zones and everything, I’m lucky if he calls me on my birthdays, or when I win a championship.

He nods. “We usually email. He and his wife and kids are doing good. Hopefully they’ll come down for Thanksgiving later this year.”
