My heart wrenches, and I wilt in place, bleak and grim. “We’ll be playing the Blizzards next Friday, so I need to be in Phoenix tomorrow.”
Emily closes her eyes and slowly shakes her head.
“Andrew….” Her voice falters. “Do you want a family?”
I instantly nod. “I’ve been doing some deep soul-searching, and yes, I want a family. I bought that house you visited thinking about having a couple of kids running around.”
She smiles a faint smile, and I want to tell her so badly I want that family to be her and Alissa, but the words get stuck in my throat.
“How do you expect to be present to your family in just a couple minutes’ worth of a visit?” she asks, deeply sad.
I look into her eyes, and I see there is a desire to be the family I wish for, but she’s doubtful of me and my capabilities.
“You think I can’t provide for you two?” I ask, not wanting to hear the answer.
“You weren’t born rich, Andrew Connoly.” Emily sighs before continuing, “You know money isn’t everything. Your time is scarce, and we need that. Alissa needs that. I was willing to leave everything and follow you to the end of the world six years ago, but now w—”
I lean forward, eyes as wide as dinner plates. She goes on “I! I have a daughter now. And I just can’t offer her a father figure who’s never around.”
With a sigh, I turn toward the door, and Emily opens it for me.
“Do you think the NHL is more important to me than you and Alissa?” I frown, somber.
“I’m not saying that, Andrew,” she replies, just as solemn. “I’m just saying that I need you more than you can be with us.”
