“How tall are you?”
“Six two, give or take. Pops is about six five, but Mama is only about five feet. I guess I’m between the two.”
“Still taller than me.” I pulled back the covers and snuggled into bed.
“I should go.” He got off the bed.
“You can’t stay a while?”
“I’d love to, but I have an early start tomorrow. I need to be at the station for eight. We’ll talk tomorrow if you’d like?”
I had every intention of talking to John tomorrow, and a wicked thought formed in my head.
“Why are you smiling like that? What are you planning?”
“Moi? What makes you think I’m doing anything of the sort?” I grinned.
“I haven’t known you that long, but I think I know when you’re teasing me.”
“Come ’ere and give me a goodnight kiss. One of us needs our beauty sleep.”
Instead of kissing me on the lips, he tucked me in and kissed my forehead.
“Remember to be a good boy tomorrow.”
“I promise, Daddy. I’ll call tomorrow. Have a good day at work. Catch all the evil men.”
Another kiss, this time on the lips.
“Goodnight, Liam. Sleep tight, and don’t let the bedbugs bite.”
After he left, I kept thinking of what we were doing. On one hand, John seemed eager to fall into the role of my Daddy. Yes, he had a lot to learn, but on the other hand, he might not be ready for all it entailed.
The nap earlier had taken the edge off my tiredness, and I tossed and turned, unable to sleep again. It was too cold to get out of bed, and I was still awake half an hour later when Drew went to bed. If the amount of shouting was anything to go by, he’d lost.
My phone pinged, and I grabbed it. The message was from Ziggy, of all people.
I guess you had a visit
Yeah, but hopefully, it’ll come to nothing.
What do you mean?
John said it was all off the table.
?? John, eh?
Shut up!
No dancing dots appeared. Had he indeed shut up? I should have known better.
Not likely. Marc says you should get in there.
Marc doesn’t talk like that.
Okay, it was me, but come on. John’s a hot Daddy if ever I saw one and perfect for you.
