“We wanted to talk to you about your sister, Georgie. She’s been visiting.”

He shook his head. “No, she’s not been here.”

“I think he doth protest too much. What do you think, John?” Sam asked me.

“Lying, just like his brother. We have the proof, Damian. You can’t lie to us. What we want to know is what she’s been up to and why would you both deny her visits? Something you want to tell us?”

His gaze darted around the room, never settling. He was hiding something.

“Look.” Sam leant forward, his hands interlocked on the table in front of him. “You’re not doing so well here. We can make a deal. It just depends on who’s going to take it. You or Stuart? Tell us what your sister has been doing, and we can arrange something.”

Damian bit his lip. Gone was the confident assailant we’d seen five years ago to be replaced by this shadow of a man.

“You want to get out of here, don’t you, Damian?” I asked. “We both know you groomed Ziggy and had a hand in his assault. But Stuart? He committed far more atrocities. He almost killed Liam. You remember him?”

Damian nodded. “I’ll tell you what you want to know, but you have to promise to get me out of here.”

I looked at Sam, both trying to hide the satisfaction we’d done it.

“What did she do, Damian?” Sam asked.

“She met a man, a boy, really. She needed someone to bully and dominate, the same as she did to us. Seeing how we were gone, she’d got bored.”

The ensuing story was one of control and sadistic tendencies. She’d abused and assaulted the guy, but it hadn’t been enough for her. She needed her brothers out of prison and wanted to throw suspicion on their convictions to secure an early release. If she could prove they hadn’t done it, she’d have them in her clutches again to control.

The witness statement Ziggy had given against them both didn’t matter. In her convoluted and insane mind, she could get them out of prison to carry on her mission to rid the world of sex workers.

The woman was mad. Damian confessed her visits were to boast about the recent assaults. She’d told them she could get them out. That she’d been able to persuade her new man to commit them. She didn’t want to get her hands dirty. The power trip she got from coercing people to do her bidding spurred her on to do more and more.

“Did she honestly think she could get you released?” The audacity of the woman.

Damian shrugged. “I just know she wanted us out to carry on as before. This new guy had threatened to go to the police, from what she said. She said she could only trust us, that we were family. Family doesn’t spill secrets. Pretty rich coming from her, seeing how she turned us both in.”

He slouched down in his chair, his arms folded.

“Do you have the name of this guy?” He’d need to be brought in too.

“No idea. You’d have to ask her.”

“Any idea where she is?” Sam asked. “Is she still living in the same house?”

“As far as I know. It was the family home. She loved it there. It’s where we spent our childhood. Georgie didn’t like change. I think that’s why her new protégé didn’t work out. He wasn’t us.”

“We’ll let you get back to your cell, but if we’ve any further questions, we’ll be back. If I find out you’ve misled us in any way, the deal’s off the table. Do you understand?”

Damian nodded. “Just get me out of here. That’s all I ask.”

Prison officers led him from the room. Sam and I looked at each other.

“I never thought she was that mentally unstable. She certainly didn’t seem that way five years ago. A little odd, maybe.”

“Let’s get back to the station.” I said, “We need to issue a warrant for her arrest and find out who this new guy of hers is. Hopefully, it won’t take us long, and we can wrap up the case in time for Christmas. Hopefully, we can enjoy the season.”

CHAPTER NINETEEN

LIAM

John returned home much later than he’d said. I wasn’t worried, though. He’d messaged me to say they’d had a break in the case and he’d be home as soon as he could.
