“Maybe Kane found out?”

“I think he did. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that you’re lucky he didn’t try to do the same to you. He still could.”

The weight of the realization processes in my mind. Dominic is fucking evil, and Jericho is right.

If Dominic can have Kane killed in prison, he can kill me, too.

If he kills me, he gets his daughter back.

“He’s using me to become governor,” I surmise.

“Yes.”

I’m a fool to have thought that motherfucker wasn’t playing me, too. And right under my nose. He let me believe I had the upper hand.

“So, when you stop being useful to him, I’m sure he’ll deal with you.” Jericho’s face clouds, and his expression hardens to stone.

It suddenly feels like a timer has been placed over my head. “I have to figure this out before that happens. Before I stop being useful to him.” I have mere weeks now before Dominic Bianchi is elected as the new governor.

“I’m going to continue working on this. We might need Virgo Antonov’s help. We’re heading into darker territory, and he has connections.”

“Get him.” At this point, I no longer care that Virgo is a Russian mob boss. We need to fight fire with fire. “That asshole isn’t going to kill me.” And he’s not getting his daughter back either.

I won’t lose Luna to her father.

The gates of hell have opened again, calling us to come in, and I'm going.

I just hope that when I’ve gone through all nine levels of hell, I make it out on the other side unscathed.

Chapter 27

Luna

Pride surges through me as I look from my father to Kimberly.

I’m sitting with them around the long table in the dining room for family dinner.

I arrived at my old home an hour ago, and I’ve been wowing them with all my updates. I’ve just started talking about how much I’ve raised for the charity and my plans for the next six months.

"My next fundraising idea is a meet-and-greet with a New York Hawks," I announce proudly, and Dad and Kimberly exchange excited glances.

The Hawks are the NHL team Luc plays for. When I came up with the idea, Hunter spoke to Luc and made the arrangements.

“A meet-and-greet event with a team like that could be just as successful as a wine auction, so I can't wait to host it.” I’m still so proud of myself for coming up with the idea. Gwen and the team are ecstatic.

"That is absolutely fantastic," Dad praises.

"Thank you."

"You never cease to amaze me, Luna." Kimberly reaches across the table to tap my hand.

“Nor me,” Dad chimes in.

"Thanks. I’m always grateful for your support."

“You will always have our support, and I must add that news like this makes family dinner that much more special.”

I smile at that.
