He shakes his head. "Don't let it."

"You think it's as simple as that?"

"No, it's not simple, not in the least. But you have to make it simple. If she is what you want, then you have to find a way. And if anyone can, I know you will."

I pull in a deep breath and nod, grateful we had this talk.

I'm in a situation where I have no control again, but I have to find a way around it.

That’s what I’m good at. I just have to open my eyes.

A knock sounds at the door, and Father releases me.

"Come in," he calls out.

My secretary, Elizabeth, opens the door and steps in. "Sorry to disturb you," she says. "I have Jericho Grayson here to see you. He’s waiting for you in your office."

My nerves spike. Jericho must have news.

"Thank you. I'm on my way."

Elizabeth bows her head and leaves.

I turn back to my father, meeting the worried look on his face.

"Be careful, Hunter," he warns.

"Always. I'll keep you updated."

"Good." He gives me a clipped nod, then I head to my office.

Jericho is waiting for me by the desk. I walk in and close the door, taking note of the stern look on his face.

"Hey, I have a lead."

"What did you find?"

"Something that will be released to the public in a few hours. Kane was murdered in prison last night."

Shock slams into my chest. “Murdered?”

“Murdered.”

According to Dominic’s plan, I was destined to rot in prison with Kane. It grieves me that I couldn’t do anything to help him before this happened.

"They found him in his cell this morning, stabbed multiple times. No one knows who did it. The cameras were turned off. But guess who visited him hours before he went to bed?"

My scalp prickles with the answer. "Dominic?"

"The one and only. The surveillance team wiped the footage of him talking to Kane but I was able to access the deleted footage. Unfortunately, as the cameras weren't running during the murder, I can’t do anything about that. They’ll make it look like a prison accident and sweep it under the rug. However, I'm sure you know what I think.”

“That Dominic had Kane killed."

Jericho nods. "Yes. The question is why."

I ball my hands into fists. "Why after so long? He’s been in prison for well over a year. Something must have happened to trigger him."

“Something that made him realize that Kane is a loose end he needed to tie up.” Jericho lifts his chin and stares at me head on. "I think whatever that something is, it’s the answer you’re looking for. I also believe it has something to do with who Dominic is working for.”
