“Nice.” Although I had a triple espresso earlier I could do with some more caffeine.

We grab a cup each then sit opposite each other. I take a sip and it hits the spot, giving my mind another much-needed jolt.

“How was your first day with the little lady?” Luc looks me over.

“I saw her last night. I was working late.”

Luc gives me a narrowed stare. “Working on Sunday, Hunter?”

“I had a few new client contracts to go over which took forever. I wanted the time off today so I put in the hours yesterday. I also thought it would be better for me to be away so Luna could get used to the house.”

“Really?”

“Yes.”

Paige told me that Luna wasn't fond of being in my room. Of course, I'd prepared for that. I told her I'd deal with it and Luna would be fine. Paige knows my plans and is aware of the situation, and like all the other staff, she gets paid enough not to ask too many questions. So she’ll roll with whatever shit she might see happening that the average person would likely be suspicious of.

As uncomfortable as the situation is I don't want Luna in her own room. Doing so would loosen my control over her. I want her to have that awareness of my presence even when I'm not there. Just in case she gets any bright ideas about Ryan, or her father for that matter.

“Wouldn’t it have been better for you to be at home to get used to her?”

“No. Things are bad enough between us as it is. Obviously she hates me, so better to get work done than deal with things I can’t control here.” I take another sip of the coffee and lean back against the seat.

Luc sighs and sets his coffee down on the table. “I hate to say this but maybe things are gonna be like that for some time to come. This is a big change for you both. Plus, isn't there the issue of Ryan?”

I stifle a groan at the mention of that prick's name. As if I don't know Ryan is going to be a problem, Luc keeps bringing him up.

“I'll deal with Ryan when I have to. It's not like they were actually together.” Honestly, I didn’t know about Ryan until the night Luna and I officially met.

“Doesn’t he complicate things?”

“It’s nothing I can’t handle. No matter what she feels for him, there’s no way she can believe he’s so perfect if they’ve been friends all their lives and he’s never tried to be with her.” I sound as if I actually know but I don’t and, of course, I’d rather not be caught up in a situation where my bride-to-be is pining over some Romeo who shouldn’t even be on my radar. “What's worrying me is everything else to do with her father. I don't know how long I'm gonna have to wait until the next step takes shape.”

Luc’s smile fades. “What has Jericho said?”

I drag in a deep breath of the fresh sea air. “Not a lot, but he's still looking. He thinks there's more to find. If he didn’t think so I don't think I would've taken things this far.”

Although I’ve come a long way, I’ll continue feeling like I'm stuck in limbo until the matter is resolved.

“What if there's nothing more to find, Hunter? What you guys found was pretty big.”

“Believe me I worry about that all the time. Jericho is checking out a few leads. Once he’s done that I’ll know what to do next.”

Luc nods. “If there's one thing I know about Jericho, it’s that he wouldn't be looking somewhere if he wasn't sure there was something to find. And if there's something to find, he'll find it.”

“Nothing is truer.”

Jericho is actually Luc’s best friend but we all met as kids. Over the years Jericho became the guy you’d turn to when you needed to resolve impossible shit.

I'm about to say something more when I catch sight of my beautiful wife-to-be walking in the garden.

The sight of her in a tight tank top, yoga pants which show off her finest assets, and her hair pulled up on top of her head in a messy bun stalls my mind.

She doesn't see me watching her until she reaches the gate that leads to the beach. When she spots me she freezes momentarily, then she waits as if she expects me to do something.

I'm not.

I won’t toy with her today. I wonder, though, if she’s thinking about last night.
