“What do you want me to say, Asher?”

“Tell me the truth.”

“Which one?”

“That you like this girl. That she’s the first to come along in years to interest you. That she’s the first girl you’ve cared about since Alexis.”

He’s too observant for his own good. Like always when Alexis’ name is mentioned, my mind takes the journey down memory lane, but I stop thinking before I turn down the darker paths.

I set my chopsticks down and rest my elbows on the counter. “What if my answer is all of the above?”

“Then that’s the answer.”

“But it means nothing, and now I don’t know what to do.”

“You always know what to do.” He gives me a clipped nod.

“Not so much this time. I feel like I’m not the person Luna thinks I am. In a way I’m not but that was never supposed to matter. We get married on Saturday and I don’t know how long it will last before I have to unleash the truth about my secrets and my plans.”

Asher sighs then taps on the counter. “Do you really care about her?”

“Yeah.”

“Then maybe you should see how things go. Stop thinking about her like she’s part of a plan and think of her as just a girl.”

That’s dangerous. Doing so would erase the line I’m struggling to keep up between us.

“She’s going to be your wife,” he reminds me.

“I know, but business is supposed to be business.”

“Sure, but business is whatever you make it. That means everything you do next will be based on what you truly want.”

Observant and wise.

I stare back at him and think about what I truly want.

I want many things.

The question hangs in the air and follows me like a ghost for the rest of the night, and the rest of my time in Japan.

Before I know it I’m standing before the priest and my guests at the wedding.

It’s time.

My wedding day has finally arrived and the countdown is over.

People all around me are smiling, waiting to watch me take my vows, and everything looks like it was plucked straight from a fairytale. Add in the fact that I’m getting married at Oheka castle and I’m pretty much a character in a story book.

My mind awakens when the violinists begin playing the Wedding March, then I see Luna.

She’s walking down the aisle to me with her father next to her.

God, I truly hate that man, but as I look at him I don’t see him.

All I see is her walking toward me in her wedding dress.

She looks more beautiful than I’ve ever seen her, and the way she’s looking at me unlocks my heart again.
