The only thing I’ve known Hunter to talk about that didn’t involve business is his sailing trip. He asked me to go with him, but I’m not sure he meant it, and I’m not sure if I should. At the rate we’re going, we’ll be little more than business associates by then.

He’ll come by and see me when he can schedule me in, and we’ll do… I don’t know what we’ll do.

He’s my husband, and that means something to me. Add in the fact that I’m insanely attracted to him, and I know I’m not going to say no to him if he wants sex, even if I’m ignored for the rest of my life.

“If you think any harder, your pretty little head will explode.” Hunter’s voice is suddenly in my ear.

I turn and find him right behind me. He’d gone off with Asher and Luc to talk and smoke and do whatever else they do when they’re alone.

I’ve been in the courtyard with Emily, listening to great aunt Bessie talking about her husbands. She was married six times.

Even though Hunter has come over, Bessie is still talking about how she left husband number five—who cheated on her—for husband number six, who sadly died last year. She swears six times is the charm because number six saved her in every way.

“I was just paying attention,” I say to Hunter.

He gives me a skeptical stare. “Yes, maybe the way a mindless zombie would.”

He’s right, so I don’t argue. I was only half listening to Aunt Bessie.

“It’s time to head home. Ready to go?”

It feels like that question is asking me so many different things. Ready to go start our lives, ready to be husband and wife, ready to say goodbye to the life I led yesterday and embrace this new one.

The answer to those things is no, I’m not ready, but I guess going home is a start.

“Sure.”

Hunter extends his hand to take mine. I give it to him and glance back at Emily, who is already watching me and smiling away.

“See you in a few days,” she says.

“See you then.”

Everyone else offers us the same looks of excitement as Hunter leads me away.

We reach our car, a stunning Rolls Royce decorated for the wedding with satin ribbons and flowers. Robert is waiting patiently at the wheel.

We slide into the back seat, and moments later, we’re heading home.

When we drive onto the main road, Hunter glances across at me.

I look at him, too, wondering what he’s going to say to me. But anything he had in mind is interrupted when his phone rings.

He reaches for it in his pocket and answers it, then, to my greatest shock, he starts talking to whoever is on the line in Japanese.

I don’t know the language, but my manga obsession has pushed me to learn a thing or two, so I pick up a few words to know it’s surprise, surprise a business call.

It lasts the journey home, and I even catch Robert giving Hunter the occasional side-eye on the way, clearly not amused that he’s working on today of all days.

I’m not amused either, especially given that he couldn’t even call me one time while he was away, but he can take a business call from Japan on our wedding day.

I’m so stupid. What did I think was going to happen to me when I chose the Shark?

People say actions speak louder than words. Hunter’s is deafening.

I’m so irritated by it that when we pull up on the drive, I get out and say nothing as I make my way up the steps to the house.

I can no longer hide that I’m pissed off, and it’s probably best I just go to bed.
