I hear Hunter’s hurried footsteps behind me before I reach the door, but I don’t slow down.

“Hey, wait up.” He catches up to me.

“No. Finnish your call.”

“I’m done.”

“Another might come through that you’ll have to take.”

Hunter follows me into the bedroom but lags behind to close the door.

“I’m not taking any more calls,” he says, but I ignore him.

I walk around to my side of the bed, kick off my heels, and undo the top buttons at the back of my gown to loosen it so I can breathe easier.

It’s not particularly tight, but everything feels tight on me when I’m upset.

Hunter walks up to me, forcing me to look at him.

“I said I’m not taking any more calls. I shouldn’t have taken that one.”

I’m shocked when he tosses the phone across the room to the little stack of towels Paige must have left us.

I look at Hunter and search his eyes, taking note of the seriousness in them, but still, I say nothing.

“You’re mad at me, and it’s not just about the phone call.”

“How observant of you.” Sarcasm drips from my words.

“Tell me what’s wrong.”

He knows what’s wrong. There’s no way he doesn’t. Hunter Le Blanche is the kind of man who doesn’t ask a question like that unless he already knows the answer. That infuriates me more.

“You are such an asshole,” I blurt.

He regards me openly with humor softening his expression. “This again, Bellissima?”

“Yes. This again. Asshole is the best word for you. Jerk is way too mild.”

A little smile tugs at the corners of his mouth. “Okay, I’m an asshole. But we know that.”

When he touches my cheek, sparks of heat flow from his fingertips into my skin. Hunter moves closer, enveloping me in his scent. It stirs my desire, and I have to swallow past the lump in my throat to breathe.

“We also know you’re mad at me because I didn’t call while I was away.” He brushes his nose against mine.

“It doesn’t matter. I’m just a business contract, remember? One we wrapped up today when we said I do.”

He catches my face and his fingers splay across my neck. It’s a menacing touch that should be scary, but it has the opposite effect on me. It awakens my senses, and my body craves more of his touch.

“No, Bellissima. We didn’t wrap anything up.”

“Didn’t we?”

“No.” Hunter leans in and kisses me lightly. Like earlier, I absorb the kiss, but then he pulls away to look at me, leaving me wanting. “You stopped being a contract to me the moment I slid inside you and took the cherry between your legs.”

My breath hitches as I stare back at him.

“Did I?” My voice comes out on the edge of a careful whisper, fragile and with longing, exposing too much emotion.
