“What?”

“You did your job. Do you need me to praise you for doing your job?”

Is he being serious? I spent the last three days making sure my work was impeccable, and to make sure my presentation was spot on, perfect. I had to work with three other departments because I needed to make sure there were no flaws in the data logs.

And I don’t get even a thank you? Stubborn, flightless bird. I should have known his sudden change in behavior was a fluke.

“Stubborn, flightless bird?” Gabriel echoes my thoughts out loud. “That is what you called me the other time, right?”

Crap. I said that aloud, didn’t I? I chew on my bottom lip, thinking of how to cover up for my spill. Then it occurs to me that maybe…I shouldn’t. I should let him know what I think about him.

“I worked round the clock on this. A thank you would be nice.”

There’s confusion in his eyes for a second, and then it clicks. “Oh. You want a compliment. But you said you didn’t.”

I give him a tight-lipped smile. “There is something called reverse psychology.”

“Ah,” he nods, “I see. All right. You did a good job, Miss Quinn. I am impressed.”

Turning up my nose, I fold my arms. “The moment has passed. I don’t need your acknowledgment any longer.”

“My apologies,” Gabriel replies solemnly. “I shouldn’t have been so slow to understand. What can I do to make it up to you?”

I spend a minute mimicking him without the words, then harrumph. “Nothing. Or,” a brilliant idea hits me, “you should award me employee of the month and declare that you made an error when you judged me as being hasty and not knowing my place.”

He cocks his head from side to side and leans over the desk, bringing his face suspiciously close to mine.

“Or I could do you one better,” he whispers, looking at my lips.

I swallow hard, feeling a flush crawl up my cheeks. They turn rosy as his stare turns bolder, and I feel a fluttering in my stomach.

“What do you say?” Gabriel’s thumb traces the outline of my lower lip. “I recently replaced the desk, and I’ve been meaning to christen it. Why don’t we,” his index and middle fingers sit under my chin, “use what we have? You bent over my desk with your back arched, and me…”

Gabriel pauses, but I’m halfway through la la land, and I don’t notice until I hear him chuckling. My eyes pry open, and I see the smug look on his face. Instead of turning away in embarrassment, I reach for his tie, wrapping it around my hand.

“Okay,” I pout and shrug, “but isn’t that cliché? Why don’t we spice it up? You,” I push him to sit down and stride across the desk to perch beside him, “on your chair and me, on my knees between your legs?”

When his lips part in surprise, I take it up a notch, pushing his chair back and getting to a squat in front of him. The strands of hair framing my face are pushed back as I lean forward, bringing my face close to his crotch.

“W-what are you doing?” He stammers, and I look up in time to see his Adam’s apple bob up and down.

“You don’t want this?” I lick my lower lip. ‘I thought this is what you wanted. I’m ready.”

Gabriel exhales. “I was teasing.”

“Ah. I see. You were? You don’t want this?” I place my hand on his knee. “You don’t want my mouth on you. Too bad,” I get to my feet. “I could have shown you what I’m really good at.”

He stumbles to his feet as I walk towards the door, and he grabs my hand before I can touch the knob.

“What are you doing? Where are you going?” He asks.

Being the one in control makes me feel good.

“What do you think?” I whisper. “It is called edging, darling, and it’s time I gave you a lesson in it.”

The shock on his face as his hand falls off mine gives me enough time to escape his office.
