“You know, I don’t really like your tone,” said Sniff, shaking his head. He should have expected it, but seeing the man pull a sawed-off shotgun was a bit of a shock. A pistol takes skill. A shotgun just takes a trigger pull.

“You brought a gun?”

“Get the fucking puppies,” said Gren.

“If you fire that thing, it’s gonna make a lot of noise,” said Sniff. “I’m not the only one on the property. We have a facility a few miles away. They’ll hear that.”

“I’ll be gone by then.”

“Why do you want the puppies? Dr. Marks need more animals?” The shotgun slumped slightly, the shock on the man’s face registering. “We know.”

Seven men stepped from the trees, all of them with their weapons pointed directly at the man.

“What the hell is this?” he asked excitedly.

“This is an arrest,” said Ghost. “One you may not even get booked for, but we’ll call it an arrest all the same.”

“You make me nervous; this man dies,” he said, starting to sweat.

“Why does Marks want these puppies back?” asked Sniff.

“She just does! How the fuck would I know why? She said they’ve got what she needs, and she’s pissed that they were taken from us.”

“Did she know that you left them in shitty conditions, dying?” growled Sniff.

“She doesn’t fucking care. She just wants their hearts.”

“Oh, fuck,” muttered Sniff. “Sema. Calm down, baby.”

“Sema? Who the fuck are you talkin’ to?” said the man, waving the shotgun. The others all groaned, staring at Sniff.

“Back up,” he said to the others. “Back up. She won’t hurt any of you.”

“Who are you talkin’…” Their sweet Gorilla gripped the man’s neck, lifting him easily off the ground with one hand. She stared at the men, signing bad man.

“Yes,” signed Sniff. “Yes, he’s a bad man. We’ll take care of him.”

Bad man.

“Sniff, brother, what do we do?” asked Gaspar.

“How the hell do I know? This is my first gorilla exposure.” Just when they thought she might put him down, she slammed him into the ground, the sound of his neck cracking echoing through the trees. Taking the shotgun, she snapped it in half, tossing it aside.

Bad man.

“Yep, we know, sweet girl,” smirked Nine. The others stared at him. “What? She’s not wrong. Are we gonna be upset over this piece of shit dying?”

“No. We’re not upset, but I would have liked to have questioned him more,” said Ghost. He turned to Otto. “Take the van and see if you can get anything out of it. If there’s nothing, get rid of it.” Otto nodded.

“Done. What about him?”

Sema signed hungry, and they all stared at her. Gorillas didn’t eat meat, especially the meat of men. Then she signed something else.

“What the hell is she saying?” asked Ian. Sniff laughed, unable to speak for a few moments. When he caught his breath, he nodded at Sema.

“She says the alligator is hungry.”
