Leaning against the railing, I watch as the city lights stretch out before us. The night is alive with possibilities, just like the connection we share. “Maybe I am,” I muse. “But I want to unravel every layer of you, Charlotte.”

Her eyes soften, and she steps closer, our bodies almost touching. “You’ve already unraveled more than anyone else ever has.”

A jolt of electricity passes through me at her proximity, and it takes every ounce of self-control not to pull her into my arms right then and there. But there’s something important I need to tell her before it’s too late.

“Charlotte,” I begin, my voice steady but laced with urgency. “I can’t deny that this connection between us is something special. It goes beyond what either of us anticipated.”

She nods, her gaze fixed on mine. “I feel it too.”

“But…” I continue, taking a deep breath, “… there are things about me that you don’t know. Things that might change everything for us.”

She reaches out and gently cups my face in her hands, her touch both comforting and intimately electrifying.

“Whatever it is, I want to know,” she whispers, her voice filled with trust and vulnerability. “I want to know all of you, no matter what.”

I close my eyes for a moment, savoring the feel of her touch against my skin. When I open them, I see nothing but sincerity in her eyes. It’s a rare kind of acceptance I’ve never experienced before, and it fills me with newfound hope.

“I won’t pretend that club life will be easy, but I think, until things settle down more here, that it’s safer for you back in California.”

Charlotte’s face falls.

“But that doesn’t mean I want to let you go,” I continue quickly, desperate to ease her worry. “I’m willing to do whatever it takes to keep you safe and by my side, even if it means making sacrifices now. I promise you that I’ll come for you in San Simeon once things are settled here.”

She searches my eyes, her grip on my face tightening slightly. “Are you sure about this? About us?”

I nod fervently, my heart pounding in my chest. “I’ve never been surer about anything in my life.”

“I feel the same way. I came here with Minny to learn how to have fun again, and instead, I learned more than I could have ever imagined because of you.” Tears well up in her eyes, shimmering under the moonlight. “You’ve given me more hope in the last two days than in my entire life.”

Deep down, I know that keeping her away from the chaos and violence that surrounds the club is the right decision.

“I don’t want to leave you,” she whispers, her voice trembling with emotion. “I can’t imagine being apart from you.”

A lump forms in my throat, and I struggle to find the right words to ease her pain. With a heavy sigh, I pull her into a tight embrace, needing the physical closeness as much as she does.

“I don’t want to be apart from you, either,” I admit, my voice muffled against her hair. “But for now, it’s what’s best for both of us.”

Silence settles between us as we hold each other tightly, the weight of our impending separation becoming almost unbearable. Time seems to stand still in this moment, and all that exists is the steady beat of our hearts, entwined in a bittersweet dance of love and longing.

Eventually, we pull away from each other, tears staining Charlotte’s cheeks. She wipes them away with trembling hands and looks at me with a determined gaze. “I’ll wait for you,” she says, her voice filled with unwavering resolve. “No matter how long it takes, I’ll wait.”

“I promise you, Charlotte,” I say, my voice filled with sincerity. “I will come for you as soon as I can. We will be together again.”

She smiles through her tears, a flicker of hope igniting in her eyes. “I’ll hold onto that promise,” she whispers, her voice barely audible against the city’s nighttime symphony.

With one last lingering touch, we both know it’s time to say goodbye. The rooftop terrace is no longer our sanctuary but a reminder of the love and connection we share. As Charlotte disappears into the night, I cling to my vow.

Once this business with Ace is through, I will see her again.

Bad luck and hard love have brought us together, and I refuse to let anything tear us apart.

CHAPTER 12

THOR

Since Charlotte left to take Minny to the airport, I find myself unable to go back to sleep. My mind is too wrapped up in what’s coming. She’s been the distraction I needed while V worked his magic back home. Moving too soon on Ace and his operation could spell disaster since I’m here on my own. With backup hours away, I have to play this by the book.

My phone chimes next to me, and when I peer over at it, I find a text from Charlotte.
