“I remember,” he grumbles, then takes off in a sprint down the hallway towards his bedroom.

“Mom?”

“Hey, you have a good ride?”

I find her in the living room, her bag with knitting supplies beside her as she works on another scarf. She’s on a mission this year to knit as many scarves as she can to donate to the local women and children’s shelter. “Yeah, chilly but not too bad.”

“Who’s this woman Josiah was telling me about? He said the girl in his class, Tanzanite, was it? It’s her mom or someone who you’ve got a crush on.”

“He said that, those words exactly?”

She shrugs, “Well, yeah. He said you were going to go look for her mom.”

“Christ, that kid knows too much,” I mutter, wondering how in the hell he figured out my plan earlier. I just asked for her last name, and he somehow figured me out.

She cocks a brow, waiting. “So, he was right?”

“Yes. I didn’t get her number and wanted to see if she was okay. I met her at Josiah’s field trip, and she seemed kinda overwhelmed.”

“Mmhm, I’m sure that’s it.”

Snickering, I shake my head. “Seriously. She’s a nice woman. I wanted to see if she felt the same connection I did.”

Her lips tilt up, a pleased smile overtaking her face. “That’s wonderful, honey! She must be something special then.”

I nod, rubbing the back of my neck as I feel my face getting hot. “She is. I think she likes me too; I got her number.”

“Hey, good for you. Well, I hope it all works out, and she’s got a kid Josiah’s age, so even better. When can I meet her?”

“We’re not there yet, Mom, but I’ll let you know if it progresses.”

“Sounds good, I’ll have my prayer group pray on it.”

“Lord, Ma, no need to go that far.”

“Nonsense, you deserve some love and happiness in your life and that boy needs a momma.”

“Thanks for cooking. How did dinner turn out?” I ask, shifting the conversation.

“Good. I made it, didn’t I?” She smirks, making me laugh. “I have to get going, the morning comes sooner than I like.”

“That’s the truth,” I agree and give her a hug after she stands and gathers her stuff. I walk her out, watching her get into her car and wave before she drives off. She stops by a few times a week and by doing so, makes my life much easier.

I’m lying in bed later that night, staring at my cell phone, trying to distract myself when all I want to do is text Allison. I can’t help but wonder if she’s awake right now and how the rest of her day went. Did she finally confront him and let the bastard know she’s onto his double life? I’ve heard about people leading two separate lives but never imagined it possible, then I meet someone it’s actually happening to. Crazy. I have a lot of respect for Allison. If I were in the same situation, I’d lose my shit and probably set the house on fire or something. Take my kid and never look back. What a huge mess.

Me: How was the rest of your day?

I finally cave and break my silence. I have to know what she’s thinking. I doubt she’s sleeping; she probably has too much going on in her head to get any decent rest. I wish I could change it for her somehow, but there’s not much I can do while she’s staying in his house.

My phone instantly rings, making me jump. Her name flashes, further surprising me and I can’t seem to swipe the accept button fast enough. “Hello?”

“You never told me what your real name is,” she immediately says, making me grin.

“I have to have some sort of mystery about me. How else will I keep you interested?”

“Hmm,” she drags the noncommittal sound out. “There’s a lot of mystery about you, so I think you’re in the clear.”

I chuckle. “You say that now, but what happens when you find out I have a regular boring name and decide I’m average like the rest of them?”
