“There is nothing average about you, far above, in fact.”
“That so?”
“I can personally confirm.”
I’m grinning so hard my cheeks are going to end up sore. “Good to know. Tell me about today?”
“I confronted him.”
“Good girl,” I murmur and hear her breath hitch with my praise.
“He denied it, of course.”
“Bastard.”
“Yeah, he would’ve denied it to his grave had I not pulled out the proof.”
“You’re joking.”
“Not even a little bit. He was doing his best to make it seem like I was being jealous and irrational. I got sick of it after going around and around for a solid hour, I admitted I had the email. I’d forwarded it to my private account first thing this morning just incase he found it and deleted it. Anyway, after arguing about it, I pulled the email up in our joint account and showed him. You’re not going to believe this next part.”
“What happened?”
“He tried to lie again! He said it was addressed wrong that he’d bought a house to surprise me.”
“No fucking way.”
“You should’ve seen his face when I told him I spoke to the real estate agency, and they want to know where he got Samantha’s ring and how they’re surprising me by painting the baby’s room. I also said they mentioned how lovely it was working with Mike and Samantha in person, and they appreciated him being able to accommodate them by going to the office.”
“Did he finally confess?”
“He told me it wasn’t what I was thinking, and he could explain.”
“I told him if he didn’t stop all this, I was contacting Samantha. He freaked out which leads me to believe she knows nothing about Mike’s family. She probably believes he’s single and all in with her and their baby. It makes me sick, he’s so much worse than I ever imagined.”
“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”
“Thank you, but I’m actually okay. I had time to talk with you about it, then process it on my own. It still hurts knowing everything Tanzanite is used to will be changing, but I’m going to make sure those changes are good. It will be hard with Mike, but maybe this will be the wake-up he needs to finally be a good father to her.”
“He can’t hear us talking right now?”
“Oh no, I started sleeping in the guest room last year when I saw him kiss another woman with my own eyes. It’s different discovering evidence and thinking something, but then actually seeing the affair right in front of you there’re no more blinders to hide behind. I had already stopped having sex with him before because I’d gotten hints of an affair, but then once I saw the kiss, I wouldn’t stay in the same room even to sleep.”
“Wow, so things have been strained for a long time, then.”
“Absolutely. Like I explained, I was trying to keep everything normal for Tanny and concentrate on being the best for her.”
“And now? What’s next?”
“Divorce. Mike promised to make sure I have what I need to care for our daughter and not have to be away from her too much. In other words, he knows I’ll get a hefty alimony check. He’s going to be on his best behavior because he doesn’t want me to find this new woman of his. I know him well enough to know he’ll try to divorce as quietly as possible, then probably marry the other woman, pretending he never had a first wife at all.”
“He’s a goddamn snake.”
“Agreed. I was sad thinking about leaving our home, but after everything, I can’t wait to be out of this house. I want a fresh start and my daughter shouldn’t grow up thinking a healthy relationship is mine and Mike’s because it’s anything but.”
“You’re doing the right thing, and Tanzanite will look up to you for it one day.”
“I hope you’re right.”
