Austin laughed out loud and slapped the table. “She ran her car into your house?”

Dozer frowned. “Yeah. I had to get the guys over to replace a support beam and re-brick. I had Crash fix her car, but he’s holding it because she has no business driving. She doesn’t even have a license.”

Dozer felt the heat of Austin’s knowing stare and he didn’t appreciate it one bit.

“And you’re not catching feelings for this woman?”

How many times did he have to deny the obvious? “Catching feelings? What are we, in high school?”

Austin chuckled and tilted his bottle toward Dozer. “Go on with the story. I’m hoping there’s a point soon.”

“There is. She’s not from here. I don’t know where she’s from, but from her clothes and the way she talks, I’d say she’s from money. Maybe a ton of money.”

“Okay. And how does this affect the club?”

“I’m not sure. Her mom is from Pikeville and I’m taking her around to visit places her mother knew. I tagged somebody following us. I had Spidey run the plates and it’s a nobody. He thinks they used an alias.”

“You think it’s the Lucianos?”

Dozer shrugged. Maybe, but it didn’t seem to fit. “I’m not sure. Could be.”

“She could be a plant. It’s a coincidence she moved into a house right next to the KOC VP?”

Prez said out loud what Dozer had been thinking. “Agreed. But I don’t get the feeling she’s a plant. She’s waitressing at the Stardust because the girls are out with the flu. She felt sorry for Walter so she appointed herself his waitress.”

“I’d say keep an eye on her, but it sounds like you’re already doing that. It could be nothing more than a jealous husband who wants his wife back. But you’re right. It’s too coincidental. Stay on top of it. And I don’t mean to fuck her.”

He growled under his breath. “I told you. It’s not like that.”

Prez laughed and left, taking his beer and his stupid ass suspicions with him.

With nothing really to do, Dozer hung around the clubhouse and played a few more hands of cards with his brothers. They ate dinner and he was back at the Stardust fifteen minutes before nine. The closed sign was flipped on the door and the parking lot was empty except for his truck.

A few minutes later, the lights in the diner went off and Jane came out the door. He waved to Walter, who’d let her out before locking up behind her. The moment she got in the truck, he knew something was wrong.

“Hey, thanks for the ride home,” she said as she snapped the seatbelt.

“No problem.” He started the truck and put his hand across the top of her seat as he turned to see as he backed up. Putting the truck in drive, he pulled onto the road and still she sat quietly looking straight ahead. No bubbly nonsense conversation tonight.

“Everything at work go well today?” he asked trying to get her to talk.

It took her a few minutes to realize he’d spoken. “What? Oh, yeah. It was fine. Busy, but fine.”

Now he was sure something was wrong. He hadn’t known the woman long, but every single minute he’d spent with her until now had been filled with words. “Walter can be a hard person to work for. Don’t take any shit from him. Do I need to have a talk with him?”

She turned her head, her brows furrowed. “Why would you do that?”

Yeah, why would he do that? She meant nothing to him. “I’m just saying, if he’s upsetting you, let me know. I can take care of him.”

She smiled weakly. “Walter is crusty, but he’s just missing his girlfriend and the arthritis in his knees is acting up because he stands at the cooktop all day long.”

How had she picked up on so much? Dozer didn’t even know about the arthritis. So if it’s not Walter, then why was she upset? Maybe upset was the wrong word. Pensive. Look at him being all into his feelings. Fuck it!

Then he could have kicked himself when he offered, “Want to order something for dinner? Did you eat at the diner?”

“No, thanks. I think I’ll just make a PBJ sandwich if Ree hasn’t already fixed… oh, I forgot. Ree is gone. Yeah, PBJ, a shower, and bed.”

She could be missing her cousin. “You sure? I don’t mind keeping you company for a while. It has to be lonely without her.”
