God help me!

I’ve just stepped out of the shower when I hear my doorbell ring. Glancing over at my clock, I see she’s early. She rings it again before I can do anything.

She’s early and impatient.

I wrap my towel snuggly around my body, tucking the end in. By the time I reach the front door, she’s already rang the bells three more times.

Taking hold of the handle, I rip the door open. “Come on Tai, not only—” I freeze when the person in front of me isn’t Taira, but Lionel.

“Damn baby, I was hoping you’d be excited to see me, but this far exceeds my expectations.” His eyes roam the length of my body as his tongue glides across his bottom lip.

It’s then I remember I’m only in a towel.

“Lionel, what are you doing here?” I ask, pushing the door in front of me as a barricade.

He stops it with his hand and shoves it, forcing me to take a step backward as he steps inside of my apartment.

“I came to see you, baby. Our wedding is almost here and we need to get this stupid fight of ours behind us.”

Crossing my arms over my chest to make sure my towel stays in place, I glare at him. “There is no wedding! That ship sailed the moment I caught you fucking my ex-friend from behind. Now, get the fuck out of my apartment!”

“Aww baby, why are you being like this? You know the only reason I was with her was to satisfy my needs. Surely you didn’t expect me to live with blue balls because you didn’t want to put out.” He juts his bottom lip out, pouting, and I just about gag. What did I ever see in him?

“Why are you being a fucking bitch? If you would’ve fucked me, then I wouldn’t have looked for it somewhere else. Hell, it’s your fault I cheated on you, not mine.”

My mouth drops open in pure astonishment. Is he fucking for real? He’s really trying to place the blame on me. In what world does he think any of the bullshit coming out of his mouth makes any sense?

“Lionel, we’re done and I want you to leave and never come back. There is nothing left between us.”

He just sticks his hands in his pockets, rocking back and forth on his heels, not saying anything.

We’re in a standoff. I’m standing my ground with my hands crossed over my chest, and he’s looking at me like I’m an idiot. When he pulls his hands out of his pocket, a shimmer of silver catches my eye.

“Now, why would I leave? We need to reconcile. Our wedding is fast approaching and we need to squash this.” He twirls the object in his hand and it takes me a second to realize it’s a lighter.

But he doesn’t smoke? At least I’ve never seen him smoke.

“I don’t know what delusional world you’re living in, Lionel, but why don’t you go back there? In fact, instead of harassing me, why don’t you go be with Courtney? You know, the bitch that helped destroy our relationship, because I don’t want you. I’m moving on and you should, too.”

I’m staying strong because I refuse to break down in front of him. No way am I letting him know how much his betrayal has affected me. Like my grandmother always told me, once a cheater, always a cheater. There’s no way I could ever believe Lionel again. Every time he was late coming home, or I had to work a night shift, I’d always be wondering what he was doing.

“Alexis—"

“Look asshole, do we need to tell you in a different language, maybe even sign it for you, because you don’t seem to be getting the hint she doesn’t want your shriveled up, disease ridden, limp ass dick. Now get the fuck out of here before I call the cops.” Taira’s strong voice comes from outside the doorway.

I sigh in relief. Thankful that I can count on her to always be in my corner.

“This isn’t over, Alexis. You’re mine. Always have been, always will.” He flips the lighter in his hand one more time, before sliding it in his pocket and walking out the door, flipping Taira off as he goes.

“No thank you,” she hollers, before slamming and locking the door.

She cuts the distance between us, wrapping her arms around me as I sag into her body.

Taira lets me have my moment to break down, and then guides me over to the couch, lowering me down on the cushion.

When I stop sobbing, she pulls away with a stern, protective look on her face. But I also see a little anger and it’s directed at me.

“Alex, I came in on the tail of the conversation, but why was Lionel here? It seemed heated when I walked up. But I have to ask. Please tell me you didn’t cave and fuck him and then get pissed at something stupid he said and kicked him out.”
