He nods, his gaze still searching around me for goodness knows what.

“Montesano has been tracking you for months,” he says. “We couldn’t tell if it was because he wanted you or the baby.”

“Okay…”

“What was the point of him parking outside your house and watching over you like a love-sick puppy?” he asks, his voice distant.

My eyes widen, and a breath catches in my throat. I can barely believe what Tommy is saying. Most nights, I cried myself to sleep, thinking Roman only viewed me as a pawn.

Hope sparks in my chest. If Roman has been watching over me all this time, maybe he’s somewhere close?

“I had no idea,” I murmur.

“He could have snuck in and banged you senseless, but he didn’t,” Tommy says, as though not hearing my question.

My stomach roils. Roman didn’t do anything like that because he isn’t sick.

“I planned on snatching the kid from the delivery room, but there’s no point.”

“What?”

Tommy’s gaze fixes on mine. “Why do you think he resurfaced now? Because he wants you.” He giggles. “I thought he was concerned about his baby, but it’s you. Roman Montesano is head over heels in love.”

I glance into the hallway, wondering if there’s any chance I can run.

Tommy wags a finger. “My men are outside, murdering the guards Roman stationed in the apartment opposite to watch over you. What a waste of resources.”

My heart drops.

I had no idea Roman went so far to make sure I was safe.

I had no clue he truly cared.

Tommy closes the distance between us, his larger body pressing mine against the wall. “Come with me, Cousin Emberly. You’re about to serve me as bait.”

SEVENTY-ONE

ROMAN

I watch the events on the screen from over twenty minutes ago, my gut simmering with impotent rage. Fury boils in my veins, threatening to rip me into pieces. Galliano encroached on my territory, stole my meth lab, and now he has taken my wife.

This is one line he will not get away with crossing.

“Boss?”

Gil’s voice hovers on the edge of my consciousness, but I can’t hear what he’s saying through the deafening thud of my pulse.

I want to tear through that scaly old bastard, rend him into tiny pieces, and incinerate what’s left until all that remains is ash.

He touched Emberly. Choked my sweet, pregnant wife when she was at her most helpless. Now, he will die.

“Call him,” I growl.

The number we have for Tommy is no longer in service. One of the men on the floor offers the use of his phone.

Dread coils in my gut like a cobra at the mere thought of Emberly in the clutches of that maniac. He’s the same man who lured our mother from the safety of the family home, only to have her butchered under the knife of a plastic surgeon.

My vision blackens, and worry mingles with fear for my wife. Emberly wouldn’t know how to deal with a man as explosive as Galliano. He feeds off chaos and doesn’t know when to stop. If he hurts her, I’ll?—
