“Good girl.” I take several steps forward and meet her huge green eyes with a nod and a smile. “Now, step off the ledge so I can take care of you.”

She shakes her head, her lips trembling.

“What’s wrong, sweetheart?” I ask, my voice softening.

“I don’t want to be trafficked.”

My gaze snaps to Benito, who offers another shrug. Of all the reasons I imagined for her little stunt, this was the last. I still can’t muster up an explanation for this freak out apart from women’s intuition or Capello insanity.

“Who told you I was a trafficker?”

Her shoulders rise into her curls. “When I woke up, and the door was locked…”

I wait for her to complete her thought, but she lowers her head.

“Baby, that’s not how it works, and the Montesano family doesn’t deal in that kind of filth.”

Especially since we lost all the strip clubs when Vincent tricked Dad into signing over the real estate to Capello, but I digress.

My palm lands on my chest, and I take another step forward. “I’m not a monster. I’m just a man who wanted to show his appreciation for the best night of his life. The reason I took so long was because I wanted to make breakfast myself to prove that you were more than just a one-night stand.”

She looks down at me from the ledge, her eyes flickering with hope. “I don’t believe you.”

“You don’t have to.” I take another step toward the balcony door.

Benito tosses a pair of flip-flops at my feet.

I give him a nod of thanks and slip them on while sliding the key into the lock. “Come down off the balcony railing.”

The balcony door swings open, and I step over the broken glass.

Emberly skitters backward down the balcony ledge, leaving bloody footprints before pausing at the corner with her arms outstretched like a tightrope walker.

My heart sinks. Obviously, my sweet talking only worked from a distance.

The men below laugh and shout and whistle. I make a mental note to deal with those assholes later. Right now, I need to focus on the key to securing our legacy.

“Emberly,” I growl.

“Roman,” Benito whispers a warning.

I shake my head. Coaxing her won’t work. Neither will appealing to her reason, because I must have fucked her senseless. This madwoman has made up her mind that I’ve brought her here to be trafficked.

“I’ll give you a count of five,” I say, my voice threatening and low. “If you don’t get off that ledge, I will spank your pussy until it cries for mercy. After that, I’ll bend you over this railing and fuck you into submission.”

Her cheeks turn red, and her breathing quickens. “Then you’ll hand me over to one of your pimps?”

“I already told you that the Montesano family doesn’t sell women. One.”

She shoots out her arms. “Stay back.”

I take another step toward her. “Two. At the rate you’re bleeding, you’ll get light-headed, slip on that blood, and break your neck. Three.”

Emberly’s eyes widen. “Wait!”

This has gone far enough. I refuse to fall for her bullshit. “You need first aid. Four.”

“Do you swear you won’t let anyone else touch me?”
