Page 33 of Snaring Emberly

“Don’t deny it,” she yells.

“Hear me out,” I growl. “The door must have locked itself when I went downstairs to make us breakfast.”

“Liar!” she screeches, her voice shrill.

What’s wrong with this chick? A line like that would have worked before I got locked up, or at least earned me the benefit of the doubt.

I soften my voice and pull my brows into a confused frown. “Emberly, why would I lock you in a room when you gave me the best night of my life?”

“Bullshit.”

The second part of what I said was the truth, even though she’s right that I have a valid reason to keep her confined. Holding back a growl of frustration, I step forward.

“S-Stay away.” She brandishes her shank like a short sword.

“I know you’re upset, but I’m not bullshitting. I have no reason to imprison you in my family home in front of witnesses.”

She stares at me, her chest rising and falling with rapid breaths, accentuating her hardened nipples straining against the sheet.

My cock twitches. Emberly Kay might be batshit crazy, but she’s fucking hot.

“Take a look into the garden,” I say. “By now, my men will be standing below the balcony, ready to catch you before you fall. Someone has already called for a tarp. Jumping won’t solve a thing, but if you step off that ledge, I’ll take you out for a nice brunch.”

Her eyes narrow and she gives me a side-long stare. Maybe she’s considering my offer.

I take another step toward her, but she screams, “Get back!”

The door behind me creaks open, and Benito steps in. My hackles rise. My little brother says nothing, but last night’s warning rings in my ears about sex making Emberly uncooperative.

What do they say about the fury of a scorned woman? They’re a pain in the fucking ass. If platitudes don’t work on this insane bitch, then maybe she’ll listen to a threat. I know just how to make myself look like the better option than escaping, and it’s all thanks to her ex-boyfriend, the cop.

“Benito, tell her what you said when you interrupted me in the kitchen while I was making Emberly’s coffee.”

My brother clears his throat. “That the police are at the gates.”

“What do they want?” she asks, her voice trembling.

“Is your name Emberly Kay?” Benito drawls. “If so, there’s four squad cars and a warrant for your arrest.”

She lets out a strangled cry. I’m compelled to wrap my hands around her delicate neck and squeeze until she spits out my stolen wealth. I shelve that thought for after I’ve talked her off the ledge.

“You’re lying,” she says.

Still keeping my eyes fixed on Emberly, I turn my head to where Benito stands at the door. “There’s only one way to find out. Benito, you have my permission to let the police through the gates. Let one of them deal with her.”

“No!” she shrieks.

I turn back to her with my brow raised. “Who do you think will get blamed if you jump? Those bastards are itching to shove me back into death row.”

She swallows, her eyes wide.

The morning sun shines through her dark curls, coloring their ends a beautiful shade of amber. I don’t think I fully appreciated the extent of her beauty until now. It’s almost tragic that it’s wasted on someone I’ll have to kill, but I can’t stop staring.

“Put down the shank,” I say in the tone of voice I’d use to coax a frightened kitten.

The glass drops from her fingers and lands on the balcony floor in several bloody pieces.

My chest swells with triumph, and I already imagine my brothers and myself shooting down the casino lights and replacing them with the Montesano name.
