I stiffened instantly, at a loss as to what to do. It was apparent he was seducing me. Or maybe it wasn’t obvious to him as everything he said was so earnest, I couldn’t second guess his intentions.

Maybe he did want to give me his virginity, but a voice nagged at the back of my head that Rei didn’t understand what that meant. He might think it a trade, just like his sweet kisses, no matter how much I insisted intimacy was not a currency in of itself, at least between fated mates.

“Fine, give it to me when the time is right. I’d be honored to watch you fall apart under my touch,” I growled, hand landing on my omega’s chest before sliding down his stomach and shoving him away.

“But not right now. Right now, we test things out. I’ve been tracking Gotham, watching his movements. His borders are not consistent. He reinforces them with your magic, but not all at once.”

“So?” Rei whispered, wrapping his hand around mine while I continued to clutch his stomach, wondering how glorious it would feel to bury my cock so deep inside I could feel myself fucking him there.

Damn, this fucking rut!

“So we attempt to escape along a route he has not reinforced. I’ll summon reinforcements the second we are close to Tilri,” I lied, knowing we could probably only reach the bay, but at least it would give me an idea of how long he could last.

“The Elohime capital!” Rei shouted, excited, clasping his hands together.

“Yes, that one. Once I have the muscle I need, we’ll dispose of Gotham.”

“And then I’ll be free?” Rei’s eyes sparkled with delight, even though I could tell, he could tell, that day wasn’t today.

“Well…” I stumbled over my words, knowing I couldn’t tell him the truth. “Yes. Free from him.”

It was a truth and a lie, and all I could offer Rei without confronting the fact that I was no better than his captor. The king, my elder, sent me to slay Gotham and bring Rei in chains, and I would never do that, so my mission would remain incomplete.

Rei nodded, “Alright. Okay. I’m willing to try. On the ground, you’ll have to help me twist my hair up in order to walk. Thankfully, he’s been taking massive amounts during his nightly harvests. It’s at my ankles tonight, the shortest it’s been in years… Oh, that’s right, Ziran?”

“Huh?” I asked, panting softly.

“Why not take my stairs? Climb my hair, I mean. You must be using so much energy to stay a bird. It’ll be easier if our plans fail,” he said.

“You already think I’ll fail you, huh?” I asked.

“No, never. You’ve never failed me once since we’ve met. Our plans failing doesn’t mean you’ve failed me, my alpha. Gotham is just stronger than our willpower… for now,” Rei said with a grin.

It annoyed me to be considered lesser to that wicked old man, but it warmed my heart that Rei was coming to understand my loyalty to him. And that he called me his alpha.

“What’s this about climbing your stairs then?” I said as we stood.

“I think it's best you just climb up like he does. You seem more tired every night, keeping that songbird shape. Why not use my hair?” Rei repeated the ridiculous question. “Draining your magic isn’t wise.”

“Regardless, it hurts you more to climb up your hair. And the only entrance to the tower is sealed with magic so dense I’d zap my powers for a year to break it. Me, Elohime royalty. So I know that old man has enough power to make it up here without ripping your hair. Gotham does it to hurt you. Do you know this? Why would I do what he does when I can fly to your window instead?”

“Of course, he does it to hurt me. I’m naive, not stupid, remember Ziran? Besides, Gotham never used to,” Rei said, motioning to the bolted bedroom door. “He used to take the stairs until our fight when he sealed me away. That doesn’t change the fact that you should do the same since scaling the tower is impossible with your bare hands. Or should I say gloved?”

“Stop joking,” I whispered as we approached the window.

“Why? Doesn’t it hurt you to use your energy that way?” he asked me the infuriating question again as if using his hair was some easy task for him instead.

I quirked an eyebrow, sure my confusion and anger couldn’t be masked. “Sure, it does, but harming you isn’t the solution. If the plan fails, we’ll tie some to this doorknob so you can climb back yourself. Use it to fill his bag, too. I’ll use all that I can to shield you from his shadow work and make my way down to the ground. Fair?”

“Fair, alpha.”

Rei nodded, tucking his chin into his neck so his horn was level with my lips. For some unknown reason, I wanted to kiss it and suck it, not because his heat was making me horny. No, a sweeter urge surged within me, a protective one I chalked up to my alpha instincts.

Then, I leaped from the window before I did something rash. My heart soared as I finally reached the ground, reforming from the mist of my spell.

“Remember to tie the end,” I shouted, and he nodded with enchanted scissors.

I sidestepped Reimund’s hair, which tumbled over the ledge and hung just above my head. As I instructed, he tied the other end to the door bolted shut by Gotham, and then, hesitantly, my mate climbed out.
