“Ah, I see. Then how about I become a bird, and we can sing the day away?” I asked as he toyed with the useless trinkets stacked in his hoarded room, realigning them.

He was more concerned with making them appear neat and organized above him on the shelves, than the pure luneria coins inside the chest below him. It was enough to buy a small city. But, I suspected money meant nothing to Reimund, who never had a use for it. Gotham probably stole the coins from the royal treasury when he fled the capital and forgot about them.

Sitting on Rei’s bed as he cleaned up for me, for that was what he was doing despite his attitude, I couldn’t help but be overcome with tenderness.

Even when he scolded me sharply, Rei looked at me with such reverence and devotion that I was forced to wilt, self-soothing by saying the next day I’d devise a plan. One that didn’t mean Rei would be bound in chains in a new prison, or worse, headless once the king learned a quarterblood’s blood was filled with our ancient magic’s source.

I had to find a solution fast—or, at the very least, a way to lift his mood. He thought kisses were currency because Gotham showed affection only when he kissed Rei, sometimes on the forehead, cheek, and even the hand. If I kissed him now, Rei would be over the moon. But I wanted to give him something that didn’t please me, too.

“Anything…” I said out loud, absently, wondering why I was even there if I didn’t have a plan.

“Ziran! You’re hurt,” Rei shouted, pulling me from my morbid thoughts.

He dropped to his knees, his hand braced on my knee, and I stiffened, catching a whiff of his pure aroma as he inspected the cut on my hand. My omega’s soft fingers kneaded my skin, and my breath came out in short, stiff tufts.

“See, I told you sitting on trees would hurt you. Everfrost leaves are prickly. Just make your nest above my bed as I’ve asked,” Rei said, staring up at me with his gray eyes, smiling sweetly at me finally.

He was far too close, partially nude, as his body was covered in a near-translucent nightgown. I had asked him to start wearing clothes for my sake, and now I’d rather he be nude than tempt me with a partial peek of his body.

Rei was far too unguarded as an omega, even more so as we were unmated, fated mates, as oxymoronic as that sounded. Since I hadn’t sealed our bond yet, my mark wouldn’t stick to his skin when I was away. It helped us disguise that I was here, but the alpha in me needed my mark to last.

I wanted to flip Rei onto his back and drill his sweet, dripping-wet hole until he learned respect and accepted me as his mate, alpha, and king. With such wicked thoughts racing through my head every night, there was no way I could be content in a nest above his head.

How strange and wicked this bond is. I didn’t know Reimund Gardiner existed during the last full moon, and now he seems like the end-all, be-all of existence to me.

I highly doubted sex would quench the ravenous thirst inside of me, my rut near, thrown out of whack because of our first encounter. But I figured getting my dick wet would at least lift the permanent haze inside of my brain.

I buried my nose into his silky hair before Rei could protest, losing myself in him for a moment so that I could steel myself for another night spent away scheming.

“Do you wish to mate, Ziran?” Rei asked quite flippantly, shrugging off the weight of my body.

“If so, it’s your duty as my alpha to prepare me thoroughly first,” he declared to my utter shock, guiding me onto my back as he straddled my hips.

My mouth flapped like a fish, recovering long enough to ask, “Aren’t you a virgin?”

“Of course, I’m a virgin. Only a fool like you has ventured so deep inside these cursed woods to find me. It’s no small feat to evade Gotham’s curse,” Reimund said matter-of-factly, belittling me in the same breath he showered me with praise, rubbing my chest. “But this heat feels like it’s lasted since we met. Maybe we can help each other in another way while you plan our escape route.”

I covered my nose, suppressing a moan as he rocked gently, grinding against my cock, “...toxic. An omega seducing me? My pride will never recover from meeting you, Rei. And the answer is no. Not until we find a way to free you.”

“Is my scent toxic to you?” Rei asked, panicked.

“No, it’s intoxicating little omega. It makes me want to breed…”

That tight little ass went unsaid as I slammed my hand against my mouth so hard I could feel my teeth rattle. Alarmed, I pushed Rei away as his scent flooded the room, sitting up to clear my head.

If the joy of seeing a rainbow or looking at the rising sun could be distilled into a pheromone, I would call that Reimund’s. It was pure joy, the essence of everything good and right, driving me to my breaking point. I swallowed hard, determined to think with my head rather than the mini-devil straining against my pants.

“Then we should mate. It’ll feel good for both of us. I love your scent, Ziran. I hope you love mine. Do you?” he asked innocently, far too eagerly and innocently, leaning on my back.

“No, it… Mating changes an omega fundamentally. And an alpha, too. And for a madman who seeks ultimate control…” I trailed off as he tossed some of his hair over his petite shoulder.

“Taking charge of my body is the ultimate betrayal,” Rei finished my sentence with a sigh. “But I don’t see how surrendering it to a vagabond is a step in the right direction. Nonetheless, we’re mates, so it should be okay.”

I scoffed. Me, a vagabond? His accusations were so far from the truth I couldn’t even laugh. But I knew he was sincere when I stared into his frosty gaze, the gray melting into a warm silver hue.

“So what? You want me to claim you first?” I asked, teasing him a bit, knowing I was playing with fire before I said it.

“Claim me? Conquer me? You alphas are all bark, no bite in real life, just like the stories. You can’t take what I surrender to you freely, Ziran,” Rei said, eyelids hooded, leaning in as his breath ghosted against my lips.
