Cath was carrying the red box, and Laura was right behind her, appearing slightly confused. I’d instructed my assistant of what to do earlier on, so she knew what to expect, and she was grinning from ear to ear once I shared with her my plan of getting Laura back.

“Spencer, what’s going on? It seems like you’re just about to do a press conference. I’d better go.” Laura gazed around, luckily not noticing how nervous I really was.

A moment later, Cath handed me the red box.

“Yes, come on, we don’t have a lot of time.” I pulled her out of the back room so that we were both standing in front of the cameras.

Laura paled when I winked at her and then opened the red box right in front of her. Then I picked up a pair of rose-pink handcuffs that someone had once given to me with the engagement invitation and handcuffed Laura to me in front of all the reporters who had gathered in front of us. She was too stunned to react. Then I handed the box back to Cath, who appeared ecstatic.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I apologise for the confusion with the Chancellor box, but I wanted to make sure that this woman here wouldn’t escape, so the box served a different purpose for today, so now let’s begin.”

Everybody looked very, very confused, but a few people laughed, and the room buzzed.

“What the hell, Spencer? Have you lost your mind?” Laura glanced around.

“Yes, I've lost my mind for you,” I muttered and sent her a wink. My heartbeat was unsteady, and I was sweaty, but I finally had her attention, so I could relax, because in a second the whole world would know how serious I was about her. I walked with her right towards the microphones while she was trying to stand back.

I picked up the paperwork and passed it over to Cath, who gaped at us.

“Thank you all for coming. Unfortunately, we won’t be discussing the budget today, but my private life,” I began and lifted my hands. “You all probably know Laura. She’s my daughter’s nanny, but unfortunately, for her, this is her last day, because I’m firing her, effective immediately.”

Laura gasped, and a few whispers moved through the crowd of reporters. Laura parted her lips like she wanted to say something, but she remained silent. Tension filled the room, thick enough to suffocate as I tried to gather my thoughts. Almost everyone in the room had their phones on, pointing at me like they were forgetting that we were broadcasting this whole thing live.

“I'm a single father, and Maja’s mother was never in the picture and probably never will be. A few months ago, this woman …” I paused and smiled at Laura, who looked like she was just about to pass out. “Showed up to my house, and I mistook her for someone else, so we didn’t have the best start, so much so that she absolutely hated my guts and told me that to my face, knowing that I could fire her anytime.”

Laughter echoed in the room.

“Anyway, I wanted to give her a chance because I was desperate for a nanny. My daughter had driven all her previous nannies away, and it was my fault. Then Laura stepped in, and things changed. Needless to say, I realised that I was falling for her. My position of power and my charismatic personality has not impressed her whatsoever, and frankly, I’m surprised that she hasn’t run away, because I've not treated her as well as I should have. I've upset and hurt her, so that’s why I'm standing in front of all of you today, trying to apologise. My heart belongs to her. I love this woman and I’m not ashamed to admit it. She’s the love of my life, and I never wish to be apart from her ever again.”

Chapter Forty-Seven

Laura

This was completely unexpected, so I told myself this was a dream and I would wake up soon.

Spencer stared at me with eyes full of love.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I, the Prime Minister of this country, have fallen madly in love with my nanny. You can call this whatever you want, but I'm not prepared to step down from my position just because I choose to fight for true love.”

I didn’t know where to look. I wasn’t equipped to deal with these emotions in public, then tears filled my eyes.

My chest felt heavy with raw and painful love for this man. I wanted to tell him to stop, but the cameras were rolling and people were still listening. Spencer was taking a huge risk; he could ruin his career if this was taken out of context.

“Unfortunately, I betrayed her trust when a photo of us from our holiday in Sicily was leaked online, and that is the reason I brought her here today. Laura needs to see that I'll do whatever it takes to get her back, even if I've to stay handcuffed to her for the rest of the day. I'll remain in the office as the leader of this country with this wonderful woman by my side. I hope you will all accept it. Thank you for listening, and that will be all for now,” he said and then he paused, gazing at me for a long moment, before he pulled me in front of him.

Seconds later, he went down on one knee, and I gasped.

This is not happening, this is not happening, he can’t be serious. My inner voice was screaming at me. I was having a mini heart attack. Spencer smiled up at me, and then he reached into his jacket pocket and took out a small black box that he opened and presented to me, which wasn’t that easy since my right hand was chained to his.

“Laura Watkins, will you marry me?”

Gasps and whispers echoed all around me while I stared at the most beautiful ring that I had ever seen, unable to make any coherent response. I was completely stunned. I didn’t know how long I was silent, but at some point Spencer muttered:

“Laura, please put me out of my misery. I’m trying to impress you.”

His voice brought me back to reality, and I smiled, because I couldn’t say no to this man. I didn’t want to. I loved him so much and I wanted to be his wife.

“Yes, Spencer, I’ll marry you,” I replied. Tears spilled down my cheeks, and in that moment, the whole room cheered.
