“Spencer, that is an excellent idea. You should take her away for a weekend in Sicily,” Mum suggested. “That would be so romantic, darling. Make an effort and show her how much you love her, then she'll forgive you.”

They needed to stop interfering in my love life.

Samantha had left London a few hours after James had spoken to her in the studio. I didn’t know why I’d asked him to do what he did, but I would sleep better at night knowing that the mother of my child wouldn’t end up with a bullet in her head. This would complicate things for me, so I decided to pay Sam with my own money, so she could settle her debt with the Polish mob, and leave the two hundred grand in Laura’s account, so she could decide later what she wanted to do with it. I should have left Sam to fend for herself, but after all, she was Laura’s sister. She was part of the family whether I liked it or not.

I wasn’t sure how Laura felt about her yet, but as soon as we were back together, I would chat to her about it. I had been trying to talk to her, but she’d only texted me back if it involved Maja, otherwise she was ignoring me. She was driving me crazy again, so I thought long and hard about my plan to win her back, and part of it was already set in motion.

“Why are you letting Maja spend time with Veronica? I know she quit working in the club, but that doesn’t mean she's a good influence on Maja. Veronica shouldn’t be around her at all,” Rupert growled later on after dinner as I was getting ready to leave.

Laura was already back at work, taking care of Maja, but I had other plans for her.

I glanced at my brother, who clearly still hadn’t resolved his feud with Veronica. This has gone on for long enough.

“Maja can’t wait to hang out with them again.” I tried to speak quietly because Mum was in the kitchen, wrapping more food for me to take home. “Maja likes her, and you like her, too, so you might as well ask her out.”

“Be careful, Spencer, Veronica is bad news. She cannot be trusted around a child.” He sounded angry. Something had happened between him and Veronica that had driven them even farther apart, but he was tight-lipped. He refused to discuss her with me.

I wanted to say something to him but decided against it. Rupert was more stubborn than me, and he needed to figure things out for himself.

“I’m leaving and I'll not tell you what to do, because you won’t listen to me, but I want you to know that you may regret this in the future,” I said, then I went to talk to my mother about the next few days to make sure everything was arranged. Laura was going to be mine, whatever it took.

On Tuesday morning, Laura walked into the kitchen and stopped when she saw me standing there, attempting to make a coffee for her, but my machine wasn’t cooperating. She point-blank refused to move back into Number 10, but it was just a matter of time before she was back in my bed again.

Fuck, she looked so beautiful, wearing a fitted purple skirt and thin top. It was still warm outside in September, and I instantly wanted to rip those clothes off her and fuck her right there on my kitchen worktop.

“I thought we agreed you weren’t supposed to be here.” She glared at me with suspicion. She was annoyed with me, but it didn’t matter, because after this afternoon, we were going to be inseparable.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be leaving soon,” I said, heat rushing down to my crotch, especially when she bit down on her bottom lip.

Her hair was styled in a messy bun, and I wanted to grab it in my fist so damn much. Fucking focus, Spencer, my inner voice chastised.

“Can you come to my office at twelve, please? Cath will give you the details. We need to pick up Maja from school early.”

“And why do we have to pick her up together?”

“It’s for publicity reasons,” I said. I hated lying to her, but she had a good heart, and even though she didn’t want to see me right now, I knew she would want to help me.

“All right, whatever,” she said.

“Thank you. See you later,” I said and walked out of the kitchen.

I headed straight to my office and then threw myself into my busy and hectic work schedule. Around half past eleven, Jeremy showed up, appearing tense.

“Why are there reporters gathering upstairs? Are you going to do a press conference?”

“Yes, in half an hour,” I said.

“There's nothing on the agenda. What are you going to discuss?”

“I’ll talk to you later; I need to make a phone call.”

Jeremy hesitated for a few seconds, but he eventually left the room.

I followed him out of the office a few minutes later, nervous. Laura was likely already waiting for me upstairs.

Jeremy and probably the rest of the staff would lose their minds, but this was my life. I was the one in charge, so they had to get with the programme if they wanted to keep working for me.

The woman who brightened my day showed up, looking uncertain as we were waiting to go in front of the cameras. My team was there, and my publicist and a few other people were talking quietly behind me.
