“I apologise for this intrusion, but I was dining upstairs in one of the private areas when I spotted you coming into the restaurant.” I got straight to the point.

Laura’s jaw was hung open, and she looked like she didn’t understand any words that came out of my mouth. I glanced around, seeing that several people were giving us curious stares and whispering among themselves, so I needed to get her out of here as soon as possible.

“I just received a concerning phone call.” I lowered my voice to a whisper. “It’s about Maja. I'm afraid I need your help right now. “

“What happened to Maja?” She removed her napkin from her lap and placed it on the side of her plate.

“I’ll let you know once we’re on the way. The car is waiting outside. I apologise, Mr—”

“Mr Prime Minister, my name is Lucian Doherty, and I’m the CEO of Adius Energy Group. I believe we have already met a long time ago. Laura mentioned that she works for you,” the man answered, then he stood to shake my hand.

“Mr Doherty, I apologise once again, but I need to steal Laura away. This is an urgent matter,” I said. I turned to Laura. “Please?”

She nodded, seeming so concerned. I felt like shit for deceiving her this way, but I had no other choice.

“Lucian, I’m sorry. I'll call you tomorrow.” She shot that wanker an apologetic smile.

Over my dead body, woman. He’s not for you.

“It was a pleasure, Mr Prime Minister,” he said before we walked away.

More people had caught on to my presence here, and I was glad I didn’t have to hurry her along. She didn’t even spare me a glance as we headed outside.

“The car is just over there,” I told her when one agent who had gone ahead waved us over.

He opened the door, urging us to get inside. Laura got in first, and I was just about to do the same when someone approached.

“Mr Prime Minister, may I've a word, please?” A blonde woman, who I pegged to be around her mid-forties, smiled.

One of the agents pushed her away, but I stopped him, showing that I had this, so he backed off.

“I'm sorry, but I’m in a bit of a hurry,” I said. “My agent will give you my secretary’s number. She can arrange an appointment.”

“Mr Prime Minister, I believe it will benefit you greatly to hear me out. I work for ITV,” she explained with another brilliant smile, then showed me her card.

I swore under my breath, wondering how the hell she’d got to me so fast. Just my luck she’d been in the restaurant, too. I leaned inside the car, where Laura was sitting. “I'll be right back,” I told her, then shut the door and moved away from the street.

My agents were not happy about this, of course.

“What is it exactly that you want, Miss—?”

“Porter. My name is Louise Porter.”

“What can I do for you, Miss Porter?” I kicked myself in the rear for not letting my agents handle this a few moments ago.

“I overheard your brief exchange with your employee in the restaurant and I think I might have a story. Correct me if I’m wrong,” she said innocently.

Fuck, how the hell did she even hear me? I thought I was speaking quietly. I glared at her, trying to think on my feet. This woman would not be easily intimidated, so I had to give her something, anything, just so I could leave.

“What exactly do you want?” I asked her, point-blank.

She brushed her hair away from her face. “An exclusive interview. I'm on the Evening Show staff,” she said.

I exhaled sharply before dragging my hand through my hair. Christ.

“Please don't be concerned. I simply want to shed light on the human side of our country’s esteemed leader,” she added. “I believe the people are hungry for such news.”

I hesitated, then sighed in resignation. “Fine, I can do an interview, but my advisor has to approve the questions first.”
