The journalist smiled once more, revealing her perfectly white teeth.

“We have a deal, sir. I'll call your office if I don’t hear from you in the next week. Have a great evening.” She then strutted away before I could say anything else.

I entered the Range Rover.

“Elm Street, Brian, as fast as you can,” I said to my driver.

Laura turned to face me, her gaze questioning. She looked amazing in her beautiful purple dress, and my heart squeezed at the sight.

I was furious that she’d dressed up so nicely for that fucker. But now she wasn’t buying what I was selling anymore. Sparks flew from her eyes. Uh-oh … I was in trouble.

“What the hell is going on, Spencer? If you’ve made up this story about Maja to lure me away from my date, I’m seriously going to flip,” she said as the driver eased the car into heavy London traffic.

“Take a breath, woman. We’ll talk soon. I don’t want anyone to hear what I've to say,” I told her.

She continued to glower at me for several long moments before she folded her arms over her chest and sat back, staring straight ahead. The atmosphere in the vehicle was filled with tension, and that put me even more on edge.

It took us another twenty minutes to get to my fuck pad. Laura was quiet when I opened the door for her and she exited the car. She glanced around and instantly narrowed her gaze, recognising the place where we’d met for the first time.

I was relieved when she went inside without further discussion. I told Brian and the agents to stay put as I shut the door.

Tonight, two things would happen: I would either fuck the living daylights out of her or let her go, even though I wasn’t ready for either. Definitely not for the second option.

Chapter Twenty-One

Laura

Even though I’d vaguely heard Spencer give the address to the driver, I was ready to blow up when the car pulled up outside the place where he normally met his escort girls. And the place we’d first met in a great big mix-up. This definitely wasn’t home.

Spencer Banks continued to drive me crazy. I couldn’t believe that he’d showed up in the restaurant, interrupted my date, and dared to bring me back to his fuck pad. I hated him so damn much.

My date hadn’t been planned, but Spencer had given me a night off, and Veronica had set me up. She wanted me to have a good time, and frankly, so did I. I deserved it, and Lucian seemed like a fun guy. He was intense, probably because he was burdened by so much responsibility, but not as intimidating as Spencer.

“Of all the places on Earth, why would you bring me here, Spencer?” I asked when he followed me inside and we both entered the living room.

I remembered it all so damn well. Indeed, I’d never forget it. I still had dreams about it. He was pinning me with his gaze now but had still said nothing. Why did he have to be so incredibly good-looking and irresistible?

“So what’s going on?” I continued. “Why did we have to leave? Is Maja all right?”

He gazed down at the floor, then back at me.

“Everything is fine. Sorry for that. I just wanted to get you out of that restaurant so we could talk in private,” he said.

I clenched my fists, suppressing the urge to punch him. Shit on a stick. He was just … awful. Infuriating. Aaaaaaaarrrrrghhhh.

“What? So you ruined my evening and made some lies about work-related stuff, then dragged me out in the middle of my dinner date just so we could talk? Are you out of your goddamn mind?” I shouted.

“I knew you wouldn’t want to leave otherwise,” he said. He didn’t sound like he regretted what he’d done one bit. Of course, he believed it was okay for him to ruin my evening. “We need to talk, so I fucking told my date to leave. It wasn’t working out anyway.”

“Your date? You were on a date, too.” I laughed nervously, in utter disbelief that he would go to such an extreme. He acted like he’d lost his mind. And he’d been on a date …

“Unbelievable,” I commented, because I didn't know what else to say.

“So really, Laura? You went out with that guy?”

I told myself to keep it together, so I closed my eyes and took several deep breaths. This somehow worked, so I opened them and stared at him. That riled me up again, so this time I tried to convince myself that violence wasn’t the answer. I didn't want to act like the totally unhinged Spencer Banks.

“You have no right to ask me that. Why would you think it was okay for you to lie and drag me out here like this?” I hissed.
