“I don’t fucking care. We are talking about my daughter here. I know she can be challenging, but her heart is in the right place. This isn't just any issue. She wouldn’t punch anyone if there wasn’t a specific reason for it, Laura. Besides, a visit to that school is long overdue. I haven’t been to a parents’ evening there since I started running for political office several years ago.”

We walked outside, tailed by a number of agents who would accompany us.

The distance from Number 10 to Maja’s school was short, so I briefed the team on what would happen. They didn’t seem too pleased with the idea, but they would work with it as they always did.

This felt strange, I had to admit. The Range Rover pulled over, and we headed there. It would have been so good to walk for once, as it was a nice day, but I wasn’t allowed to do normal things like that without full planning.

Maja had attended Wycombe Academy since before my election, and she enjoyed it. This was an elite private school with very small classes that most of the upper-class kids attended. As we entered the building with my men, I felt a little guilty that I hadn’t made an effort to be more involved in Maja’s school life. She was only nine, and I had already missed so much.

The school receptionist nearly fell off her chair when she saw Laura and I approach, along with my detail. Parents who sent their kids to this school were wealthy and privileged, so I suspected she didn’t see many of them actually coming to school themselves very often.

“Prime Minister … sir … we weren’t expecting—”

“Please, can you let the headmistress know that we are here to see her? She’s expecting us,” I cut her off before she could make a fuss. Luckily, there weren’t any other children or staff around, so I could get this sorted swiftly.

The woman’s face went beet red, and she nodded frantically, dialling the number. Laura and I sat in the comfortable chairs to wait.

“I've to say that I'm quite surprised that you’d want to get involved, Spencer. Pleasantly so,” Laura said after clearing her throat.

This was serious, but the fact she was comfortable around me at that moment made me feel better.

“Surprised that I can be a human being sometimes?” I asked.

She nodded.

What kind of monster had I become?

Thankfully, I had no time to mull that thought over. Several moments later, the door of the office farther down the hall opened up, and a woman stepped out. Her eyes widened when she saw me sitting there.

“Prime Minister and Miss Watkins, what a surprise. Please come inside my office and let’s talk.” Mrs Whittaker sounded very formal and uncomfortable.

I had learnt from Jeremy a while back that she had been running Wycombe Academy for years. I put my hand on Laura’s lower back when we went inside. The touch instantly sent shivers down my spine.

“Thank you for seeing us, Mrs Whittaker. When Laura mentioned what transpired today, I was determined to be present for this meeting.” I wanted to get straight to the point.

“Of course, I mean, this is pretty serious. Your daughter has been suspended, unfortunately, because the school cannot tolerate this kind of behaviour,” the woman stated.

That pissed me off, and I suspected she either didn’t fucking like me or my politics, or both. I just sensed it from the odd vibe I was getting from her, because normally women behaved differently when I was around them.

She was a petite, older woman, probably in her mid-fifties, with brown hair and smooth features, and it was obvious she was a stickler for rules. Yet, she probably also had her ‘pet students’ and families.

“I’m rather confused, because surely, we need to ask Maja what happened first? She should be here, right?” I asked, already incensed because it didn’t seem that she was interested in hearing both sides of the story.

“I don’t think that’s necessary. Maja knows that what she has done isn’t right—”

“I insist. I want to know why my daughter punched a nine-year-old boy,” I interrupted, and that shut her up for a bit.

Laura shifted in the chair next to me, and I wanted nothing more than to know what she was thinking. The headmistress’ face flushed, flustered as she was.

“Well, the boy is fourteen, not nine, sir,” she quickly corrected me.

My jaw dropped.

“What? Are you telling me that my daughter punched a fourteen-year-old boy and you want to suspend her before you get to the bottom of it all?” I snapped, my voice rising a little. What the fuck was going on here?

“Well, let me just call Maja in here.” She picked up the phone.

Five minutes later, my daughter was brought in by the secretary. Her face instantly brightened up when she spotted me.
