“Dad, what are you doing here?” she asked.

It hurt me that she was so surprised to see me …

We all sat, and I turned to her.

“I’m here to find out what happened earlier today, Maja. Why did you punch that boy?” I gave her a reassuring gaze.

Mrs Whittaker was now staring at Maja with a cold and judgemental expression, arms folded over her chest. I didn’t like how she and the school were handling this whole situation at all.

Maja glanced at me and then at Laura, who smiled so gently at her, then nodded. My daughter appeared to be so grown up, reminding me a lot of Samantha in that moment.

“I got angry when Mark asked me to go to the bathroom with him, and he kept asking other girls, too.” Maja looked down at her hands.

Laura let out an audible gasp next to me, and I clenched my fists, but I had to stay fucking calm. I already knew where this was going.

“So that’s why you punched him, because he asked you to go to the bathroom with him?” I repeated.

Maja’s attention was on me, her eyes so wide and brimming with moisture.

“He said he wanted me to take off my shirt, to see if I'm a real woman yet,” she stated. “Cora was crying because he said some nasty things to her, too, so I punched him. He made me really angry, Dad.”

This time I was ready to smash something, and I gripped the chair so tight, I thought I might break it. I glanced at Laura, who instantly reached out to take my daughter’s hand in hers. I faced the headmistress, whose blood had drained from her face.

“Did you know about these details, Mrs Whittaker?” I asked, already guessing the answer. “I'm aware of how you were happy to suspend Maja and sweep this whole thing under the carpet while you let that boy continue to molest younger girls.” I spoke louder than I should, but the headmistress needed to fucking understand that she was being totally incompetent. “Are the exorbitant fees we pay not enough to protect all the students equally?” Blood was rushing to my ears, and fury blinded me.

“Well, no … I mean, we were going to quest—”

“That’s a lie and you know it. Whatever excuses you may come up with are rubbish. Do you realise that this little shit has made highly inappropriate sexual remarks towards my nine-year-old daughter and her friend, and just how serious this is? Why have the police not been called already?” I asked in disbelief.

The woman’s eyes went as wide as saucers at my crude comments. Maja and Laura both appeared to be in shock.

“He should be lucky that Maja only punched him because he won’t be able to stand once I’m done with him,” I said.

“Mr Banks … I mean, Prime Minister, violence isn't the answer! The school has to follow certain protocols, and you shouldn’t be making any verbal threats,” the headmistress said, her voice weak and breathless.

“Violence might not be your answer, but that boy will not have a prayer, a leg to stand on, or any future children if he dares to touch or harass my daughter again,” I said through gritted teeth.

“Of course, sir, I promise I'll deal with Mark Chester, and he'll be reprimanded accordingly,” the headmistress stated. She must have seen that I was close to really losing my shit. She was completely useless as the head of the school.

“And my daughter will not be suspended, because I’m taking her out of this school for a week so you have that time to sort things out before she returns. I mean it, Mrs Whittaker, because trust me, you will hear from me again if this situation isn’t dealt with accordingly. And you won’t like it,” I said, then glanced back at Maja and Laura. “Come on, ladies. Time to leave.”

Chapter Twenty-Four

Laura

I was looking at Spencer, thinking that maybe I had misjudged his interest in his daughter this whole time, because what he had just done was totally unexpected. And awesome. I had planned on having a peaceful day today, but then I had to deal with Maja facing unexpected suspension. When I was just about to leave for school, I’d bumped into Spencer.

He’d forced me to tell him what had happened and demanded that he join me. Despite my reluctance, considering the delicate situation, I had to relent. When I used to work for the Forresters, the young boy, Luca, was bullied at school and often came home crying, but his father refused to acknowledge it, and that had totally broken my heart.

Spencer had behaved the complete opposite, because not only had he gone with me to school, but he had also put Headmistress Whittaker in her place. I had to admit I didn’t really like that woman. She was always so cold to me whenever I saw her outside the school, but after Spencer had wiped the floor with her, my ovaries exploded, or rather high-fived each other. After Friday night and this weekend, I’d decided the man was batshit crazy. I hated that he’d lied to me just so I would leave with him, but what he just did completely changed my perception of him, in a positive way.

He was a good father to Maja and he was going the extra mile to fight for his daughter’s right to be safe, especially in school. In that moment, all I wanted to do was kiss him and bear his future children.

“Mr Banks, please, let’s discuss this further. I apologise for this incident, but we all have to follow school policy.” The headmistress walked out with us.

We finally stepped in the corridor. It must be breaktime because all the kids were milling around, hanging out in little groups outside the classrooms.

“We have nothing else to talk about, but I expect an update within a week or I’m pulling Maja out of this school and I'll be alerting the other parents if you haven’t already done so,” he said, this time more calmly as we kept on moving.
