Lucian didn’t seem to want to budge, but Laura pulled him away from the group.
“Pleasure seeing you again, sir,” he said with an edge to his tone.
Maja hadn’t even noticed that I had arrived yet, so I stood and kept an eye on her. Laura was officially defying me, and I was ready to spank that disobedient attitude out of her. It seemed whenever we took one step forward, we both had to take two steps backwards. She infuriated me so fucking much.
Several people who were lounging by the pool turned to stare as I sat on a lounger, away from the crowd. I took my shirt off, my gaze fixed on my nanny. My detail laid claim to a table close by, on alert.
I was dying for a scotch but I didn’t move from my seat. No one dared approach because of who I was—my security would get involved. I watched Maja playing with the other kids and smiled, wondering what was taking Laura so long to get back. I would stay where I was, though, because I couldn’t cause a scene.
“It was a nice gesture from your prime minister, bringing you your favourite iced coffee, don’t you think?”
“Oh yes, it was quite the surprise.”
Laura’s voice, to my left. I craned my neck fleetingly to the side as though I had whiplash, then went back to watching Maja. Laura was talking to another woman I presumed was also a nanny as I’d recognised she was caring for the children of Nigel Stearne, a politician I’d known for years. She had mentioned this nanny before, but I couldn’t recall her name. They must have met at the school gate, because Stearne’s boys were attending the same school as Maja.
The pair had meandered over to the splash pad to keep a closer eye on Maja and the other children—conveniently within earshot of me. Since I was sitting in the shade, away from everyone, they weren’t paying me any mind.
“That was very sweet of him,” Laura added.
Sweet? Did she see me as fucking sweet?
“I think it was a very romantic gesture, especially since he’s your boss. Why, my boss doesn’t do any of that,” the other nanny said, giggling.
Yeah, tell her exactly what’s on your mind … You have been cagey around me for days.
They both had their backs to me, but from this angle I had a perfect view of Laura’s arse.
“We had some disagreements about some things, especially in the beginning when he promised me that he would be home to put Maja to bed, since she was missing him so much. Luckily, we managed to resolve this issue when I threatened him to leave, and since then his relationship with Maja improved. He’s very protective of his daughter. There was this incident in school a week ago or so and I thought I would never say this but I was impressed by how Spencer dealt with this whole thing.”
Laura didn’t know this girl very well, otherwise she would probably have told her about the whole incident in detail. I didn’t think what happened in school was a big deal at all, but I was suddenly glad that I impressed Laura.
“Nigel doesn’t really deal with his sons school, he seems very stressed out with his work, but he finds time for his sons,” the other nanny mused. “Okay, so tell me about the PM dating life? Apparently he hasn’t been seen with a woman for a very long time?”
“Spencer doesn’t date as far as I know,” Laura responded, sounding annoyed for some reason.
This was true, but I was willing to change that rule for her, which wasn’t a good idea.
“Really? So you haven’t seen him with any women since you have been working for him?” the other nanny pressed. Obviously she wasn’t done drilling Laura.
I wasn’t even surprised, because people always liked speculating about my private life, whether I ever had any women in my life.
“Well that’s not exciting at all. That man is super hot, and I can’t even imagine how he would be in be—”
“Sarah, shh, someone might hear us. We shouldn’t be really talking about this right here,” Laura cut her off.
I was in a way disappointed that she didn’t take the bait. I truly wanted to know if she wanted to jump my bones as much as I wanted her to.
“Oh, stop being so prudish. Every woman in this country is swooning over this man while their ovaries high five each other, unless you’re being tight-lipped because you secretly know something. No judgement. If I were you I definitely wouldn’t say no to any advances from his side,” Sarah said, laughing.
She was smart, and she probably sensed the attraction between us, but Laura was too loyal to say anything.
“He made me swoon over him when he put the headmistress at school in her place, because at that moment I truly thought I could have this man’s babies, but otherwise, no. I’m not interested in him that way. He's my employer, and that’s all he ever will be,” Laura snapped, more forcefully this time.
She seemed annoyed with herself, and I was officially done for. This woman was swooning over the fact that I was willing to protect my daughter. Fuck me, that was a huge surprise, but what woman didn’t like an overprotective man? I guessed sometimes I wasn’t that much of a prick.
“Ah, that’s so romantic.” Sarah sighed. “And the PM may act like a total arsehole sometimes, but he's definitely husband material. Don’t you want to have kids someday? I know I want to have at least three at some point and I also want to be a stay-at-home mum,” Sarah announced.
I did my best to blend with the shadows, because I truly didn’t want to be busted listening to their private conversation.
