“At least he's not ruining your dates and dry humping you against the wall. I think both of them need to see a therapist,” I quipped, then lay down next to her when both girls started playing with a Frisbee next to our blanket.

“It’s better to stay away from powerful and affluent men. All they give us is trouble. We are better off being single,” she said.

I sighed.

“I couldn’t agree more.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Spencer

I returned to London from my diplomatic trip to Sweden on Friday afternoon, the last one before the summer, totally exhausted. Jeremy was still on my case about showing up in public with a woman, and I kept making excuses to avoid it. The press was only waiting to get a juicy, scandalous story involving me. He didn’t say a word about Caroline, and I hoped she hadn’t called him to complain that I had cut our date short and sent her home last Friday.

Principal Whitaker contacted my office to clarify that Mark had been suspended. His parents assured her he would never act so inappropriately again. I was pleased with the outcome. Maja normally didn’t cause me any trouble since Laura had begun looking after her, and she wouldn’t have lied about something like this, so I was glad I’d intervened.

Laura got on well with Maja, but the thought of dating someone like me was a whole different can of worms and brought a slew of problems to the table. So I wasn’t surprised that she’d rather quit her job than deal with me. Besides, I still wasn’t ready for a relationship, which was what Laura ultimately wanted. I couldn’t give her the security and love she craved … yet. At the same time, I couldn’t imagine being with anyone else.

We hadn’t had a chance to talk since the day I’d gone to Maja’s school. I still had her knickers hidden in the bottom of my dresser drawer. I had every intention of keeping them. At least things with Laura seemed stable and we’d called a truce.

It was afternoon already, so after I had a quick shower and sorted out my work for the day, I texted her asking if she had any plans for this evening because I wanted to take her and Maja out for dinner.

Maja and I are heading to the water park now. I spoke to your security, and they said it was fine. They’ll be with us.

I stared at the phone for several moments, wondering what to do, and then I texted her.

I'll meet you guys there.

Five minutes later, I called my security team and told them that they needed to take me to the water park. This would be a nightmare for them, but since last year, Maja had told me that a lot of kids from school were often there, so in the end I got my assistant to get me the club membership. Maja always enjoyed going. Since it was a private health club, I could occasionally accompany her. Now, with the sudden heat wave that had hit London, there’d be no better place to go to.

Most importantly, I got to see Laura. I hoped she had changed her mind about leaving the job. Maja needed her, and so did I.

I put on some casual clothes and got into the car. I felt optimistic and confident for some reason. I texted Craig, one of the security agents who had already made it to the destination to make sure everything was clear, to bring me some iced coffee. I’d never asked for it before, but as Laura liked it, I wanted to get it for her since I still owed her an apology.

As usual, my security team went inside first to sweep the whole place and made sure everything was in order. They also needed to warn the management and staff that I was going to be using the club. Today the whole place was a bit busier than usual because of the extreme heat.

I went inside with the iced coffee, sweat gathering on my forehead as a few other members noticed me. I didn’t mind speaking to people, but I’d come as a private person who was trying to enjoy some time with my child.

I spotted Laura and Maja in the distance. My heartbeat increased. Maja was splashing around, having a great time with her friends.

Heat rushed to my groin when I saw my nanny in her swimming costume, and it took me a few seconds to realise that she wasn’t alone. Laura was speaking to a man. They were standing very close to the main pool.

When I was close enough, a girl with bright-pink hair and lots of piercings spotted me approaching. She said something to Laura and then laughed when Laura responded. I had no idea what was being said.

Then the guy Laura was talking to turned around, and I nearly fucking tumbled with the coffee when I saw that it was the same prick—Laura’s date from that Friday night.

“What a surprise, Prime Minister. I must tell you this was the last place I expected to see you today.” He gave me an annoying grin.

“I'm here for my daughter. I thought this place was for members only?” I said, handing Laura the coffee, which she nearly dropped as our fingers brushed. An electric current shot through my spine, igniting my blood. I quickly turned my attention to the idiot, adding, “What about you Mr Doherty? Is this where the CEOs of big corporations have meetings these days?”

The girl with the pink hair laughed, and Lucian narrowed his eyes on me, obviously understanding my insinuation. I wished he would just piss off and leave us the fuck alone.

“I've been a member here for years and come here often.” He stood his ground.

He was getting on my fucking nerves.

“Well, if you’ll excuse us, I've a few things to discuss with Laura,” I said firmly.

“This is a nice surprise, Spencer.” Laura didn’t seem happy. “Why don’t you wait for me here? I'll wrap up my conversation. Maja is over there.” She pointed. “I’ll be back in a moment.”
