“Because we would have never met otherwise. I’m really glad that you’re my daughter’s nanny, Laura. It’s because of you that Maja and I've a much better relationship,” he said.

A sudden, inexplicable tug resonated within my chest, a silent testament to the emotions stirring within me.

“You were right all along, but I was too stubborn to listen to you at the time. I should have spent more time with her, but work took priority and it shouldn’t have.”

I stared at him, unable to form any words, very touched that he was willing to admit that he was in the wrong. I wasn’t a therapist, but I thought this was a groundbreaking moment for both of us, because he suddenly acknowledged the fact that he was wrong in how he parented Maja. I felt emotional.

“I’m truly glad that your relationship has improved now, and you don’t need to thank me. I just nudged you,” I said.

Then he leaned down and kissed me.

It was just a simple and soft kiss, but my skin was burning in a thousand different places, igniting my blood. He was a good and honest man, but he didn’t let other people see that side of him very easily, he only showed them the flaws. I didn’t think he was always like that, but over the years he’d let this arrogance rule him.

Then a moment later, when I was just about to tell him that he made me very happy, Maja appeared behind me. However, before I could ask her if she needed anything, she put her arms around me and squeezed me tightly.

“Laura, I love that you’re here with us, I’m having so much fun with you, Uncle Rupert, and Dad,” she said, closing her eyes.

I glanced at Spencer, overwhelmed by these unexpected words that hit me hard in the feels. He was staring at Maja with a smile.

“Oh, sweetie, I love being here with you, too. We are having such a wonderful time together,” I said, my voice breaking a little.

She opened her eyes and looked up to me.

“I love you, Laura, and I wish you could be my mum someday,” she added.

I gasped, my heart exploding and pounding loudly. This was a totally wholesome and sweet moment for all of us, and I felt like I was part of their family. I wished I could stop time, because I wanted to stay in this moment forever.

Spencer parted his lips, appearing to be completely shocked by his daughter’s admission. Tears swelled in my eyes as I wrapped my hands around her.

“I love you, too, darling, you’re such a smart little girl, so don’t you ever forget that,” I said, my voice really wobbly at this point.

It seemed that Maja sensed her father had changed for the better. I attributed this to the sunshine and the fact that he wasn’t so stressed out like when he was back in London, but also to the fact that Spencer was making an effort to change for me.

Maja nodded and then went back to her iPad. Spencer was still staring at her, emotions filling his handsome features. Then he looked at me, and I could recognise so many different emotions in his eyes: pride, admiration, and love, too. The electricity was zipping between us, and blood was drumming in my ears. I was proud of myself, proud of how far I had come to get to this moment.

“Maja has just confirmed everything I said earlier on,” he said.

I smiled. “Yeah and what’s that?”

“That you’re the most heartwarming and wonderful person, Laura Watkins. We are lucky to have you,” he replied and then added, “I've been with many women before, but I’ve never felt like this with anyone else.”

“Care to elaborate? How exactly do I make you feel?” I asked, and I knew that maybe I was pushing him a lot at that moment, but I wanted to know if this was going anywhere, so I could be prepared.

I continued to breathe, waiting for an answer. Spencer wasn’t telling me that he was falling for me, he was thanking me. We had a lot of time to discuss, mainly the logistics of our relationship and where it was going, but maybe not today. Maja’s declaration made my heart whole. I was happy that I’d managed to make her safe and loved by me.

“It feels right to have you by my side, and I want you to know you’re important to me,” he stated, confident.

I glanced down at the place I was wiping, thinking about my stormy relationship with Jake. This felt different, but I still felt a bit insecure when I was around him.

“Hey? Where did you go?”

“No other guy I’ve dated has said anything sweeter,” I admitted.

Spencer wiped his hands and touched my chin, lifting my head, so my eyes met his.

“Because they were fucking idiots. None of those guys have ever deserved you,” he snapped, sounding angry. “You’re wonderful and you’re enough. I want you to remember this whenever you doubt yourself again.”

I nodded, forced to swallow my tears, warmth spreading through my chest. He was right, I was intelligent enough to know that there was nothing wrong with me. Jake was the one with issues. I didn’t do anything wrong.
