“That’s why you should hire her straight away. You need someone who will keep you in line when I’m not around,” Jeremy stated.

I had been cold with all my staff, particularly the previous nannies, so that had to change. Otherwise, I was setting a poor example for my own daughter.

“I've a lot to do before the meeting this morning, Spence. Just give her the job and don’t be an arsehole. That shouldn’t be too hard, right?”

“Fuck off,” I barked.

“Love you, too. Gotta run,” he said.

Then he was gone before I could argue that I wasn’t difficult, I just had high expectations from people.

I made my way back into the room. Maja appeared bored, while Laura tried to engage her.

“Have you ladies got to know each other better?” I asked with a small smile.

“Maja is such a sweet little girl.” Laura smiled at my daughter.

I was a little surprised that this was going so well.

“However, she also called me an uneducated snob and then decided it was a good idea to stick her chewing gum under the coffee table.” Laura gave my daughter one of those scalding looks.

Maja’s jaw dropped, and for a split second, she just stared at Laura, seemingly unable to believe that her nanny would rat her out like that. I was equally astonished.

“Laura, could I've a word with you for a second?” I asked.

As she moved past me, I smelled her shampoo or soap—either way, the aroma stirred something in me.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

Laura tossed her hair behind her shoulders and folded her arms. “Trying to get along with your daughter. What do you think?”

“Well, it doesn’t seem to be working, so you may not be a good fit,” I sniped, though my mind raced with how well her body would fit into the curves of mine.

“I think you’re underestimating me, Prime Minister.” She flashed a smile. “I need more time to win her over, so let me try this again.” She opened the door wider and called out for Maja, but then stopped.

Maja was already gone.

Chapter Four

Laura

Damn it! Where did she go?

“She must have used the other door.” Spencer walked to the other side of the room.

Maja was smart and sassy, more than I had expected.

“Let me help you look for her.” I trailed after him into the long hallway.

“No, stay put and wait until I find her. She can’t have gone far,” Spencer said curtly, without glancing at me.

His tone irked me.

“I’m not a dog, sir, so don’t order me around like one,” I snapped, still following him closely.

Spencer shot me a deadly glare and continued to give orders to his staff to find his daughter and bring her back immediately, should they catch sight of her.

It appeared this wasn’t the first time Maja had done something like this. I was sceptical about how I’d fit in here, if I got hired. But based on how things were going right now, this was highly improbable anyway.
