“Bullshit. I know you well, Samantha. You came back because you saw an opportunity. All of this is your doing. You didn’t come here for Maja—you still don’t even care about your child,” I said. Samantha thrived on drama. Indeed, she lived for it. “Maja doesn’t need a selfish, absentee mother, and I don’t care what is in the envelope. Leave before I call security.”

A smile played on her lips. Her eyes were devoid of any warmth as she gazed at me.

“No, Spencer, I’m not leaving until I get what I came here for,” she said firmly. “Maja was a mistake. You knocked me up and you didn’t want to hear about abortion. Sure, you manage to persuade me to have her, but I was hormonal and so young back then. I should have never made that decision.”

Maja didn’t deserve this. She was such a good child.

“We don’t need to dwell on the past now because we can come to an agreement. I've some very interesting photos of Laura. She has betrayed you for money. Here is a screenshot of her bank account.”

I stared at her, blood thrumming in my ears. I didn’t want to believe her. Sam had become bitter and angry. I couldn’t figure out why she hated Laura so much. The two of them were sisters by blood.

She took the envelope from my desk and then opened it. Laura would never betray me. She had been with me since the beginning of the summer, and I’d paid her well.

There was a screenshot from her bank and one transaction that Sam or someone else had highlighted showing over two hundred thousand pounds being deposited. My heart drummed faster.

“I’m not going to explain to you how I got that information, but I wanted you to see for yourself that Laura is a liar and she has been using you since the moment you moved her into Number 10. She was the one who leaked the photo of you two from Sicily to the press and started this whole drama. Check the envelope, because all the evidence is in there, besides, you should go and ask her yourself. Tell her that you want to see her phone,” Samantha explained while I clenched my fists. “Also, I've an idea of how we can fix your image with everyone talking about you and the nanny.”

“I’m all ears. Tell me what’s on your mind?” I asked, but deep down I still didn’t believe her. Laura couldn’t have betrayed me. She was kind and had a good heart. It wasn’t in her character to do something like that.

“We go in front of the camera and we tell the whole world that we reconciled. You fire Laura and tell the press that she was the one who seduced you and that she was trying to take advantage of your position. I’ve given this a lot of thought and realised it should be me next to the Prime Minister, not my so-called sister. It’s not fair. Of course, just as Laura is being paid to be your nanny, I won’t do this for free. Your whole family is rich, and I was stupid to leave without severance pay, but we live and learn. Once you’ve given me a sufficient amount, I’ll go away and have the life that I deserve. You can show the nation that you’re a family man with values and you care what your voters think about you.”

I dragged my hand through my hair, trying to think. In a way Sam was right. People weren’t going to be too impressed with the fact that I was fucking around with my nanny, however, it wouldn’t ruin my career. This whole thing would have been different and immoral if I was a married man with children, but I wasn’t. I had been single for years and I had the right to date any woman I wanted to, including my nanny.

“Just get the hell out of my office, Sam, we are done here and we have nothing else to discuss,” I snapped at her, having had enough of her dictating how to get out of this mess to her benefit.

She got up, staring at me intensely. Finally, the sly smile vanished.

“I’m doing this for you, Spencer, because I care about you. I know this is going to hurt, but your nanny has betrayed you,” she added and then tossed the brown envelope on my table before she marched towards the door.

I snatched the envelope, breathing hard and trying to control my anger, but I was ready to smash my fist against the wall. When the door finally slammed shut, my mind raced, thinking about what I was going to do next.

I took the paperwork out of the envelope and stared at the photo of Laura and Lucian. I wasn’t sure where these were taken, but Laura was standing on the street with him. They were smiling. What the fuck? The next picture had Laura, Lucian, and Louise Rogers, the reporter, in it. Blood drained from my face when I saw Laura was typing something on her phone while the reporter woman was showing her the screen of hers.

Was Laura taking her number?

Was it possible that Laura could have leaked that photo online because she needed money?

I trusted her with all my heart. She couldn’t have betrayed me like that. In fact, I refused to believe she had. Those pictures didn’t prove a thing, really. I should sit down and have a talk with her.

In truth, there were times I wanted to tell the world about us, and as I’d told Laura, that kind of press leak didn’t faze me much.

Why would I be disappointed then?

Maybe the possible deception … the going behind my back …

Jeremy barged in, and he looked totally distraught.

“I just got a phone call from a guy at the BBC, and he shared some disturbing news with me,” Jeremy said, shutting the door.

He paced while I stared at the photographs, attempting to make sense of them.

“Jeremy, I need to be alone to think for a moment,” I said calmly.

He slapped his hands on the desk, getting my attention.

“Listen to me, man, and listen to me carefully. Your nanny is a liability. She sold you out. A huge sum of money was deposited into her account a few hours ago. Apparently, Louise Rogers from ITV has convinced her to do an exclusive interview. Now pull yourself together and let’s figure out how to deal with this before it’s too late,” he said.

So … she did do it for money? Was I a terrible judge of character? Had I just imagined her caring, her love for Maja? I put my head in my hands, leaning over the desk and wanting nothing more than to shut the world out. How could she? There had to be an explanation for all of this. If I lost faith in Laura, too, my whole life would fall apart. How could I ever trust another woman ever again?
