“She's not like that. She … she couldn’t have done it,” I murmured, ready to fucking throw up. I wasn’t angry anymore, just broken. Disappointed. Laura couldn’t be after my money, but the proof I had showed otherwise.

Perhaps I didn’t know her at all …

“Listen, man, I’m sorry you had to find out this way, but we have all the evidence. Besides, there were some other things from her past that didn’t add up. You need to fire her while I get the press conference ready,” he stated. “Is Maja’s mother still here? She could help us if we play this right. If you show a united front—”

“No way. I’m not going anywhere near that woman. Come up with an alternative,” I said.

“Are you fucking kidding me? What will the nation think if their prime minister lets himself be duped by his own nanny?” he argued. “Everyone will suddenly think you can’t keep control in your own household. Therefore, how can you lead their country?”

“I'm not giving in to Sam’s blackmail. She came back because she wants to suck me dry, you know. She’s not doing this out of the goodness of her heart, Jeremy. She just wants money out of me. She’s evil,” I said. “Now, I'm going to speak to Laura, whether you like it or not. I’ll be back later.”

Chapter Forty-One

Laura

“Why are you so sad?” Maja asked while we were watching a Disney movie in her room upstairs.

More people were arriving in the press room, and I didn’t know what to do. Spencer had told me to switch off my phone and wait for him. He also said he was going to track down Samantha, but it had been a few days since I’d learned the truth and he hadn’t managed to find her yet. I was wondering what she was planning.

“I’m not sad, just a little worried about your dad,” I explained, on edge. I couldn’t believe someone had leaked that photo online, and now it felt like the whole world was talking about me and Spencer.

“Are you going to break up with my dad and then I'll never see you again?” Maja asked.

I glanced at her, wondering where this was coming from. She couldn’t have known what was going on.

“What? Why would you say something like that?” I asked.

Maja was perceptive, though, and she’d seen me when we were surrounded by reporters outside her school. She could have easily put two and two together.

“Because he upset you, and you don’t want to be my real mum. I overheard Melissa saying that my dad is in big trouble because of you,” she stated.

I sighed and stroked her hair, trying to figure out how to explain the situation. Moments later, I heard the door downstairs, and Spencer called up for me.

“I promise I'll explain everything after I speak to your dad, all right?”

“Fine,” she replied but didn’t seem too convinced.

Spencer stood in the doorway. I could instantly tell he was very stressed out.

“Maja, I’m going to talk to Laura downstairs. You’ll be okay here for a minute?” he asked.

Something had happened—he was not himself. I could sense it.

I followed him downstairs, all the way to his private office, each step urging more panic to rise in my chest.

“What is going on, Spencer?” I asked nervously.

He leaned against his desk, his arms crossed over his chest. “Have you got your phone on you?”

“Yes, but you asked me to switch it off, so I've,” I told him.

He dragged his hand through his hair, and only then did I notice he wasn’t wearing a tie. He had dark circles under his eyes. Pulling out his phone, he scrolled through it and placed it in front of me. On the screen was a picture of me standing in the street with Lucian and the reporter lady. I had bumped into them a few days after we’d come back from Sicily. I had no idea what they were doing together, but when Lucian had introduced us, I’d told him we already knew each other.

“What were you doing with them?”

“I bumped into them outside the coffee shop. Lucian introduced me to this woman. She asked for my email address—apparently, she wanted to write an article about people who work closely with public figures, but I turned her down, of course,” I said.

“Why are you lying to me? I know you were the one who leaked our photo online. I also know about the payment posted in your account, Laura. You don’t have to pretend, but at least tell me why you did it,” he said in a flat tone.
