The moment the door closed behind the two men, I sat next to Maja. It was time to make her like me, or at least tolerate me.

“Why did you run away? Your father was really worried about you,” I said.

She continued to eat her apple, and I thought she was a beautiful girl—blonde hair, blue eyes, dressed in her school uniform. She’d probably inherited her looks from her mother, because her father was dark-haired. I had researched Spencer Banks last night but couldn’t find much information about his personal life. One website stated he was a single father, and the mother had never been in Maja’s life. She didn’t stop eating her apple.

“He didn’t care, like always, and I was hungry, so I went to look for some food,” Maja said, nonchalantly.

She hadn’t told me much, but she had given me enough to understand that she craved attention from her father.

“Do you think your dad doesn’t care much about you because now he has this very important job and his time is limited?” I pressed.

“He wasn’t like that before. He sucks now,” she said.

I smiled. This was it. I finally understood why this little girl had been behaving so badly. It seemed that no one had ever taken the time to sit down with her and listen to what she really wanted.

“Yeah, I've to agree with you on that—your father sucks, and he’s rude and obnoxious, too,” I said.

She turned her wide eyes on me.

“You shouldn’t talk about Dad like that,” she said.

“You’re right, but he hasn’t been very nice to me.” I added quickly, “but I think we can change him if you let me take care of you.”

Maja frowned. Spencer was probably too busy with work to spend much time with her, and she obviously yearned for his attention.

“How are you going to do it?” she asked.

“I’ll tell you, but first, let’s make a deal?”

“What kind of deal? You don’t have to be nice to me. I know you’ll leave soon because I drive everyone away,” Maja said with a hint of sadness.

My heart broke at the loneliness in her voice. Nine-year-olds should not feel so isolated.

“How about we become a team—me and you?” I extended my little finger in a pinky promise.

“Fine, we have a deal,” she said.

We interlocked our fingers. I grinned, excited. This was a small breakthrough, but my strategy worked.

Soon, the Prime Minister and Jeremy re-entered the room.

“Miss Watkins, can you please take Maja to school? The other nanny is unavailable. Catherine will inform you of her schedule. I’ll likely see you this evening,” Spencer stated.

I raised my brows, confused. Then I stepped towards him.

“Yes, but you have yet to give me the chance to accept the job, Prime Minister.” I crossed my arms over my chest and glared at him. He had some nerve assuming that he’d ask me to jump and I’d say how high.

“I like her!” Jeremy chuckled.

Spencer glowered.

He had to accept that I wouldn’t stand for any nonsense from him if I was going to look after his daughter properly. He had to work on his attitude before I’d even consider it.

Jeremy mirrored my stance, observing us with curiosity. Spencer was probably accustomed to people obeying him all the time, but if I was going to work for him, I needed him to know that I wouldn’t be a pushover, and if he wanted me to take care of Maja, then it would have to be on my terms.

“I need a nanny, Miss Watkins, and I don’t have time for your attitude.” He was a piece of work.

Jeremy chuckled. I could hardly contain a smile. This guy was acting like an dickhead, and it was about time someone called him out on it.
