I glanced to my right, seeing a woman who decided to make herself comfortable right next to me. She sat beside my table, smiling at me.

“Samantha, I've been hoping that we could talk at some point, but I didn’t know how to find you,” I told her, locking the screen. I was perfectly calm, but nevertheless she’d surprised me. My heart was pounding loudly. I stared at my real sister. We had both been born in Poland, and I’d had great difficulty trying to investigate what had happened to us. When I’d spoken to my mum and dad, they’d told me that they’d only found out I had a sister after they’d brought me back to London.

Samantha raised her left eyebrow. She was truly beautiful; she had distinctive features that were very similar to mine.

“Let’s skip the small talk, it’s obvious that we are related because we have the same taste in men. Spencer can be difficult, but he was always wild in bed, don’t you agree?” she asked with a smile that instantly brought on nausea.

“Why are you here? I’m sure you didn’t track me down all the way here to talk about my sex life.” I wondered what exactly her game plan was. She didn’t want anything to do with Maja, that was for sure, so I didn’t understand what she was trying to achieve.

She was blonde, had blue eyes and immaculate makeup, dressed in elegant designer clothes. Despite the makeup, her Slavic features were very prominent like mine, but it seemed that Samantha was trying hard to conceal her true roots.

We were very much alike, but she was the complete opposite of me in the way she dressed and carried herself. I always knew I wasn’t Spencer’s type, and now I understood why. I could never be like Samantha.

“No, I’m not, but I must admit your romantic track record is pretty impressive. I bet Jake was a beast in bed,” she mused.

A shudder of disgust rushed through me. I couldn’t believe I was related to someone like her.

“Anyway, I’m here because I've a very generous proposition for you.”

“Just hurry up and tell me what you want?” I’d got tired of her games.

“I think we should do an interview together. This unbelievable story will make us a lot of money. Poor Polish girls who were separated when they were children, now involved with the same man—the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.”

This conversation was just getting worse and worse.

“It’s obvious that you don’t know me, otherwise you’d know that I genuinely care about Spencer.” I glanced around the coffee shop and made sure no one else was looking at us. I wouldn’t be surprised if Samantha had someone recording the whole thing.

She placed her bag on the table and pulled out a lipstick and a small mirror.

“Too bad, because I’m a little low on funds and I could really use your help. Besides, if it wasn’t for me you would have never met Spencer.” She opened the mirror, staring at her reflection and quickly reapplying her red lipstick.

“I still don’t understand why you would do something like that? If you wanted to get back with him, you should have just come back,” I said, still trying to understand why she was pushing me into Spencer’s arms so much.

She was watching herself in the mirror, pouting her lips.

“I never really loved him. I thought he was the one, but we had different goals and aspirations, and even after so many years, I still believe in love. I don’t want Spencer back. I mean, I considered coming back when he became the PM, but I truly don’t have the motherly instinct,” she explained. “I've been searching for you for years. I even hired a private investigator in Poland, because I didn’t want to travel to that horrible country, but I gave up after he turned out to be a scammer. You were too small to remember me, but I always planned to find you. When our mother passed away, we got adopted, but then that family decided that they couldn’t take both of us, so I was unexpectedly sent to another family in Wales … God, they were such losers."

“Poland is a beautiful country,” I said, suddenly angry that she was so dismissive of where she’d been born.

“Around two years ago, I found out that you were adopted by a loving family in East London, the family that I should have had, so I started putting my little revenge plan together. It wasn’t fair, I ended up with absolute arseholes who exploited me in every way they could.”

“I still don’t get what you have to gain with me working for Spencer, taking care of Maja.” I wanted to empathise with her situation, but I didn’t know where to even start.

“I've good friends who have worked for the Emperor Club in the past, and we kept in touch. When I found you, I accidentally discovered that Veronica was your roommate, so I figured it was the best time to put my plan into motion. I've been wondering how could I get you two together since I learnt that you were my sister, and then the universe unexpectedly answered my prayers. I arranged for her to see Spencer. I knew he didn’t ask for the same woman twice, and after that, I decided that you should meet. He didn’t date, and you had experience with children, so why not send Spence someone who would take care of Maja well? Obviously another perk was that you were her aunt. Despite what you may think of me, my daughter needed a good mother and I didn’t want Spencer to settle with someone else. Luckily, you didn’t ask questions because you were desperate for work at the time. I didn't know if my plan would work, but I was hoping for the best. But you obviously made an impression on him, since he trusted you with our daughter.” She sounded so proud of herself for this whole plan.

I wanted to tell her that Maja wasn’t hers because she had never been in her life, but I was still trying to process the fact that this woman had set me up. She was the one who’d called me that night, and I had fallen into her trap, without question.

“Why would you do this?” I asked.

“Ah, so you’re one of those women who doesn’t care about her social status, and that’s the main difference between us, dear. It’s a huge story, and the fact that he acted upon his desires when you were working for him is inappropriate, but he won’t lose his position. Technically, he was a single father who fell for his nanny, but if you give an exclusive interview revealing the ins and outs of your relationship, we both get rich. I've a few debts with some dangerous people, and let’s just say, desperate times call for desperate measures.” She chuckled.

I felt physically sick that she was doing this purely for the money. Deep down, She must have cared about Maja a little, even if she claimed she didn’t.

“Spencer is never going to forgive me,” I said, suddenly gasping because I’d just realised something and I couldn’t understand how I hadn’t figured this out sooner. Samantha was the one who’d set me up for everything.

“No he won’t, especially since he thinks you leaked that photo from Sicily to the press.” She grinned at me.

“Why did you set me up? And where did that wire even come from?”
