Samantha didn’t respond. She waved at the waitress and ordered a coffee for herself. Sweat gathered on the side of my brow.

“I thought that my plan was solid, and despite what’s happened between us, I assumed Spencer still cared about me. He loved me so much before, and I wanted to believe he would ask me to help him to hush up the scandal,” she replied quickly. “And it’s better if you don’t know where this money came from. I've been formulating this plan for years, and I’ve had help. Now, unfortunately, I'm in a bit of trouble, so the financial reward is very important to me.”

I hid my face in my hands, trying to breathe.

This woman was unbelievable, cunning, manipulative, and determined to do anything in order to achieve her goal, but she didn't know who she was dealing with.

“Listen, we may share blood, but I'll never consider you to be my family, because my real sister would never have done anything so despicable. You’ve ruined my life and driven Spencer and I apart. Do you really think that after all this, I'm going to play along with your game?”

She snickered, pulling out her phone and sliding it across to me.

It was a photo of me and Spencer outside Elm Street, the night we’d met when he’d mistaken me for an escort. Then a photo of me from the bedroom upstairs on my knees.

“There are many leaks and rumours of how you two met all spreading around in the media. It’s just a matter of time before everything is revealed and Spencer’s reputation is ruined. No one will turn a blind eye to a PM who used an escort service. People will be outraged, so rather than having your relationship exposed in such a damaging way, you can make the sensible decision to address the situation honestly and openly. That way you can control the narrative and minimise any negative impact on Spencer and his career,” she said while I was having a mini heart attack.

She was smart and she was right. If I decided to do the interview, I would minimise the damage and protect him, but then he would definitely never forgive me. I knew what to do instantly. There wasn’t any other option, I had to sacrifice my love for him in the process.

This was the woman who Spencer had almost married? God, she was a truly evil bitch.

“So let me get this straight. You want to ruin Spencer’s life, even your own daughter’s life, because of money and social status? Think about Maja. Don’t you have any conscience?”

Samantha sighed, tossing her blonde hair behind her.

“I never wanted to be a mother. Maja ruined all my plans for the future I wanted, and Spencer was useless. He didn’t even want to hear about an abortion, and I don’t even know why I agreed to keep the baby. Spencer was so invested in having a real family back then, so I thought we would be happier if I said I wouldn’t get rid of it,” she explained.

But that didn’t make me feel any better.

“I know you won’t understand, but I'm very ambitious and I always get what I want. I scheduled that interview, and you had better show up or you will never work with children again.”

Spencer and Maja were going to hate me, but I had to protect them. I didn’t see any other way out of this. I felt so hopeless, so depressed that things were so complicated. Spencer would never forgive me, but I couldn’t let Samantha ruin his career and his reputation, so I had to do the interview because I was in love with him.

Chapter Forty-Four

Spencer

“Daddy, have you talked to Laura? I want her to come back to the flat, I miss her,” Maja asked for the fourth time while we were watching TV.

I ran my hand through my hair, trying to figure out how to answer this question and not make her lose control again. The past few days had been extremely stressful, and tomorrow was going to be a challenging day.

The Daily News exposed the Winter’s document which showed that shadow chancellor, Craig Winter, was involved in a supposed plot known as “Project Mercedes” to out me as a leader and place me with Jason Brown shortly after the next election. I couldn’t believe it when Jeremy handed me the papers and told me that this would be an interesting read. On top of that, one of my other MPs from my party, Aaron Reading, was caught with an escort girl by his own wife and apparently she tried to kill him, so the media were going crazy over this story. This had hit too close to home, so I had to deal with it.

Over the next few days, both stories were all over the tabloids, and journalists were camping outside Number 10, trying to get me to comment on the scandals. I had to do several press conferences to make sure that the issue had been dealt with as soon as possible. Recent scandals that involved my party members would distract people from my personal issues, but I was still worried about Laura.

“Nothing changed since we last discussed Laura, Maja, so please can you drop the subject for now?” I asked.

She’d started speaking to me again after she had been allowed to spend some time with Laura at my parents’ house. James was still trying to figure out where the money that Laura had received came from. He kept telling me he was close to the truth.

After tonight, I’d lost complete faith in her. Jeremy had informed me that Laura had agreed to do an interview with Louise—the reporter I had met at the restaurant.

Laura claimed she was innocent, and I’d wanted to believe her until I’d found out about the interview.

Maja looked at me as if I had lost my mind and jumped off the couch.

“I don’t want another nanny. I want Laura. Why won’t give her another chance?”

Here we go again. I tried to bring her closer, but she stepped away from me.

“Maja, please, we have talked about this. Laura has done a few things that really upset me, and I can’t forgive her,” I explained.
