After I’d left the studio on Friday night last week, I’d gone straight home. Veronica had screamed, then danced, then screamed again after I’d told her everything. It was a long and exhausting evening.

“It’s so amazing.”

He had been on my mind a lot in the past few days. He’d sent flowers every day with apologetic messages.

“No, you aren’t going to just forgive him. That guy has to grovel after everything that he’s put you through,” Veronica had said, once she was calm enough to speak again.

She was right. Spencer had broken my heart and my trust. I loved him and missed him, but I didn’t think I was ready to walk right back into his life like nothing had happened.

“This came for you,” Veronica said, handing me a thick envelope.

I opened it and pulled out an invitation.

“What is it?” Maja asked.

“Your dad wants to have a romantic dinner with me,” I replied, wondering what Spencer Banks was up to this time.

Chapter Forty-Six

Spencer

“My darling, Laura will not forgive you, and if I were her, I don’t think I would either. You need to do something special,” my mother said as we sat around the table for dinner on Sunday afternoon.

Mum had insisted on an emergency family meeting, because she’d said I needed to plan how to win Laura over. My brothers were there for moral support, too. Rupert smirked and shook his head.

“Mum, give it a rest. Laura will never forgive Spencer. That woman has him by the balls,” he said.

Maja giggled.

“Rupert Banks, language.” She gave him a stern expression.

She had made another roast lamb today, and it was delicious, but I couldn’t eat, because as always, my mother was right. Laura was a tough nut to crack, and I had truly fucked up.

“Don’t worry. I've something in mind, but right now, I’m done talking about it,” I said, eyeing everyone around the table. “Just make sure you all keep an eye on the news on Tuesday.”

“Just don’t do anything inappropriate,” James said, not even looking at me. “Or even romantic.”

“I thought you said you wanted me to fix it?” I cleaned my mouth.

“Fix it but not compromise your position further. Use your intelligence,” he said dryly.

I was planning something that could go two ways. I would either have to resign, or they would remember me as the most ridiculous Prime Minister in the history of this country.

“Thank you for your advice, I'll keep that in mind,” I answered.

“Whatever you’re planning, it has to be romantic. Laura is strong and smart. So far she was the only one who was brave enough to call you out on your crap, right, Apolonia?” Andrew turned to glance at his assistant who just glared at him.

I didn't know what that was about, but she was like family now, and I wouldn’t be surprised if Andrew married her, eventually.

“Dad, you’re so silly. Laura wants to go back to Sicily." Maja shoved carrots into her mouth.

“If I were her, I would dream about Sicily, too, shortcake.” Rupert chuckled.

I threw a brussels sprout at his head.

“Bumble bee, how do you know Laura wants to be back in Sicily?” Dad asked Maja.

“Because when I went to visit her on Saturday, I heard her tell her friend that she wished she was still with us on holiday in Italy.”
