It made no sense.

"W-wait," he whispered, eyes fluttering closed as Levi's lips ghosted across the skin of his pale throat.

Never sucking or licking, only tracing with flushed lips to mark a trail of territory. It was so primal, so instinctual, that Elias lifted his chin with a high noise, urging him on. The alpha smirked against his skin while guiding Elias' hands up around his neck.

This was the last choice.

His mind swam through a haze of overwhelming, mounting desire that carried the scent of leather and char. He wanted to revel in it.

"For what, Smalls? You want me, don't you?"

No pet names. He thought, aching to cover his flaming face with both hands but stopping himself at the last minute. He was a grown man, not some teenage omega who'd never been with an alpha before. What was he doing right now, near kissing a client in his office?

Stupid.

This is so stupid.

Rather than grab on for dear life and make another mistake, he placed his palms on both of Levi's meaty shoulders and pushed him back. The alpha took a reluctant step away, barely escaping the needy grasp of Elias' traitorous legs. He wasn't liable for most decisions once it got this far. His blockers were struggling again. A thin failsafe that worked with clients, but not this. Not a barrage of pheromones and sensual touches. Cloying words. Never explanations.

Elias focused on catching his wild breath as he stared the alpha down from the precarious position against the desk. Like he was offering himself or something. Embarassing. He grimaced, pushing up on his elbows to reclaim some dignity.

"Just stay back for a minute," Elias gasped, holding out one shaking hand that Levi reached for, eyes never wavering and brow furrowed. "I-I can't regulate it. My pheromones are—"

Levi cut him off. "Strong. I know. So are mine. You seem to be doing well under the influence of them, which relates to my proposal. Would you be open to listening now?"

Elias couldn't stop panting, and it was all he could think about as he stared Levi down, unsure if he was glaring or simply studying him. The darkness of his gaze paired with the warmth of his soft smile. Mussed ebony hair scattered across the right side of his forehead in silky waves. The hand that remained outstretched, palm up, as an offer. Not a demand or seduction. This was the proper choice. Was Elias receptive to considering Levi's unconventional, probably sexual proposal?

Good Goddess, that sounded wrong even in his head.

Then why did that deep, bubbling part of him insist he take this man's hand? Elias rolled his neck with a low groan, trying to ignore the throbbing of his hard cock straining against the material of his dress pants.

"Fine. But I'm only listening," he replied, gesturing between them with fluttering fingers. "There will be no more of whatever this was."

Levi's smile curled into a full-blown grin. "Sure thing."

Chapter Six

After informing August of his departure and promising to call him this weekend to speak on topics left hanging, Elias hurried out of there with Levi in tow. The alpha said nothing while they wove down the now-busy street together. After the clock struck five, the place transformed from being empty to being packed like sardines in a can. It allowed him to focus on spooling his wild nature back in, forcing each thread that spread through his limbs like untamable wildfire to huddle in the center. Concealing itself and protecting him from any subsequent events as long as Levi abided by his promise of non-interference.

He had to dodge several taller, more put-together business types on the way to his destination. Pantsuit-clad women in dark colors with rigid frowns across painted lips strode past, manicured fingers clutching at their phones. Men were just the same, ear pieces in so they could shout and walk while loosening the ties around their throats on the way to the car.

Elias was well-equipped to slip through it all, not caring whether Levi could keep up. There was a coffee shop four blocks away that sold the best lemon curd pastry he'd ever had and excellent chai lattes. He planned to get two of each, forcing the alpha to consume his favorite snacks. If the guy was planning on proposing an arranged 'let's get this over with' marriage, as Elias thought he would, it'd be the least Levi could do.

No, Elias did not want to get married.

And no, nothing would change his mind.

The shop came into view when he turned the last corner, horns honking and traffic lights blinking before hordes of people crossed the street. Elias could spot the sunny yellow building over anyone and behind everything. The modern-esque, black cursive sign above the door read Drip It, matching the leather bells jingling overhead the moment Elias stepped inside.

The soft, wafting scent of ground coffee beans and fresh dough made him do a shimmy up to thegold-speckled granite counter. His usual barista handed off the last order before turning back to the register, a broad smile tearing across the beta man's lips.

"Eli," he greeted warmly.

"Sel," Elias replied, reaching over to clasp the man's hand in a firm grip. "It's been a few, I bemoan."

Sel laughed and ran one hand through his hair. "Stop it with the Shakespeare talk. That didn't even make any sense. I mentioned starting theater a few months ago, one time, and you've been insufferable ever since."

"Fine. How about you get me my usual, then?"
