He finished cleaning and grabbed a bandage. He started to wrap Ares’ left hand, freezing when Ares spoke.

“I may also have been imagining your brother’s face while I did it.”

Jace snapped his head up. “Don’t say stuff like that.”

It was too dangerous. Some of Ronin’s guys might overhear. They’d run straight to Ronin who he knew was only waiting for an excuse to get rid of Ares. He hadn’t told Ares that, but he’d heard Ronin talk about it with some of his closest guys. He wasn’t happy with Ares because he knew Ares wasn’t with him and never would be. The only reason he kept Ares around and alive was because he didn’t want a civil war in the club. Ronin might have the loyalty of half the brothers, but Ares had the other half.

“You’re thinking mighty hard there, kid.”

He scowled at Ares. He hated it when he called him that. It made him feel like a child and despite their age gap, he was very much old enough to be in a relationship with Ares. Not that it would ever happen.

Fingers brushing across his cheek had him freezing, his breath caught in his throat. He didn’t think Ares had ever touched him like that before. Their faces were close. So fucking close he could feel Ares’ breath on his lips. Holy shit. Was this it?

Ares pulled back and cleared his throat.

Fucking hell. How many times had he done this? More than he could count. He always thought Ares was going to kiss him only for Ares to pull away at the last second. He wasn’t even sure if he’d imagined those times because Ares always seemed completely unaffected.

He swallowed hard and avoided Ares’ gaze which was easy enough because Ares was avoiding his as well. He finished wrapping Ares’ knuckles and pushed his chair back.

“There.”

He zipped up his first aid kit and dropped it on the dresser. He turned and his heart skipped a beat when he found Ares right in front of him.

Ares gave him a wry smile and said, “Thank you.”

“Sure.”

Jace’s smile was fake and from the look in Ares’ eyes, he knew it, too.

A hand on his shoulder had him sucking in a sharp breath which had Ares’ gaze dropping to his mouth. Heat spread through him and not just to his cheeks.

“If you need anything, you know where to find me,” Ares said and walked out the door.

Jace put a hand on his shoulder where he could still feel the fantom warmth of Ares’ touch. How did he tell Ares that the only thing he needed was him? That all he wanted was Ares?

He didn’t. He couldn’t.

CHAPTER TEN

Ares

HE WAS staring at a man that looked nothing like Jace and yet, he couldn’t help but compare the two. He saw the same innocence in Nash’s eyes as he did in Jace’s. Nash was strong in a different way, though. He was a paramedic. He saved people for a living. He also wasn’t taking any crap from Ares despite having been kidnapped and forced to patch up the wounds Ares had gotten because he was stupid enough to jump through a window.

When Nash finished sewing up his wounds, he asked for his bag, and when Nash put it in his lap and he struggled to get the zipper open with his gun in his hand, he put the gun behind him on the table he was sitting on.

He caught Nash staring at it and said, “I wouldn’t blame you.”

The situation was shitty as all hell, and he was pissed at Ronin and his brothers who’d kidnapped an innocent man. He wasn’t even sure why they’d done it.

Nash cleared his throat and stepped back, a flash of fear going through his dark eyes.

Ares opened his bag and pulled out a shirt. He put it on and tried not to hiss at the sharp burn through his chest.

He stared at Nash, his heart squeezing painfully as thoughts of something like this happening to Jace went through his head.

“What they did? Kidnapping you?” he said to Nash, nails digging into his palms. “It’s wrong. It’s all wrong.”

Nash crossed his arms and Ares almost smiled when he glared at him.
