Kody’s phone buzzing had him digging it out of his jacket. He couldn’t help his groan when he saw the text from his mom.

“What’s wrong?”

He raised his gaze to find Ace looking at him with his brows furrowed and worry in his eyes.

“My mom’s demanding that I show up for dinner tonight.”

The worry turned into confusion and Ace stuttered for a moment before getting out, “You don’t want to have dinner with your mom?”

“I do. I just don’t want to spend hours staring at my ex and hearing about how well he’s doing now that I’m not holding him back.”

Ace froze with his mouth open, eyes blinking rapidly at him.

“Why is your ex there?” Ace asked.

“Because he’s best friends with my youngest sisters and my parents consider him a son.”

“That’s… awful. He clearly hurt you so why are they inviting him?”

Kody shrugged. “Beats me.”

“Fuckers,” Ace said under his breath, making Kody huff out a laugh.

Usually, he didn’t appreciate anyone talking shit about his family, but Ace looked so genuinely disappointed in them that he couldn’t fault him for it.

“What did he do?” Ace asked, frowning hard for a moment before he straightened and gave Kody a curious look. “If you don’t mind me asking.”

Kody shook his head and said, “I don’t mind. It’s just… I feel like a dick for being mad and making it seem like he did something. He didn’t really. He just broke up with me. Said he wanted more.”

“That’s a shitty move,” Ace said, a growl in his voice.

He was finally starting to see that. It didn’t make him feel any less shitty about it, but at least he knew it was about Ruben and not him.

“Do you want me to go with you?” Ace asked.

“Go with me where?”

Ace cocked a brow at him and said, “Dinner.”

“Oh.” He shook his head. “I can’t ask you to do that.”

“You didn’t. I offered.”

He stared at Ace, trying to gauge the man’s reasons. This man who barely knew him was offering to go with him and if he hadn’t already seen the kind and attentive side of Ace he might’ve believed he was pulling his chain, but he knew he wasn’t.

Ace leaned closer and said in a low voice, “There’s also the alternative option. I could kill him.”

Despite something telling him Ace was being serious, he couldn’t hold back a laugh.

“No killing anyone, please. Also, I’m pretty sure showing up with you would make them all think I was doing it for attention,” he said.

“So?”

Kody felt a smile spread on his lips.

“So, that would make the whole thing even worse for me.”

“Oh.” Ace frowned, lips pressed together for a few seconds before he lifted his head to meet Kody’s gaze. “Can I come over when you’re done, then?”
