“I think I better do this on my own.”

Ace nodded and moved back. Kody didn’t let go of him.

“Actually. I changed my mind.”

Ace grinned and stepped back up against Kody, hands cupping his face as he kissed him again.

“I’ll be right here, then,” Ace said.

“Thank you.”

He pulled up his mom’s number and the second it rang, he instinctively pulled up his shoulders and clenched his teeth. Ace’s hands rubbing his arms soothingly had a warm feeling spreading through him and in a last-second decision, he put the phone on speaker.

“Oh, honey,” Mom said with a sigh. “I’m so sorry those two idiots made you leave. I would ground them if they still lived under my roof.”

Kody opened his mouth, ready to defend himself, then realized what she’d said.

“Uh.” He shared a confused look with Ace. “You’re not mad at me?”

“No. Of course not, sweetheart. Why would you think that?”

“Did you apologize?” his father yelled in the background.

“Yes, I said I was sorry. Jesus.”

Ace had a hand over his mouth as he shook his head. Yeah, this was um… strange.

“I’m sorry for leaving.”

“Oh, don’t be. I blame your sisters. We finally got you to come to dinner and then those two go off at each other. Honestly, I would’ve left, too, if I wasn’t already home.”

Kody hummed. “Yeah. Didn’t help that Ruben went after me and accused me of ‘moving on too fast.’”

“He what?” Ace growled.

Kody snapped his gaze onto Ace. Fuck. He hadn’t mentioned that last night, had he?

“Who’s that?” Mom asked, her voice rising in that snooping tone he knew all too well. “Is it your boyfriend?”

“Uh…” Kody grimaced at Ace. Had he called him his boyfriend? He didn’t think so.

Ace pressed his lips together, clearly trying not to laugh, then said, “Hi, Mrs. Haine.”

His mom made an excited high-pitched squeal that had him dropping his head into his hand while he cursed under his breath.

“Oh, honey, call me Addy. You must be Ace.”

“Ask him if he really drove his bike into Kody’s truck,” his dad yelled in the background.

Ace choked and ended up coughing while Kody took way too much pleasure in watching him until Ace leaned in to whisper, “He means the actual bike, right?”

Kody’s brain skidded to a halt.

He covered the phone’s speaker. “Did you just make that sexual?”

“He started it,” Ace said with a shrug.

Kody shook his head and failed to stop his lips from spreading in a smile.
