“Yes, I crashed into his firetruck,” Ace said. “Well, only the bike hit the truck. Kody caught me.”

His mom was quiet so they could hear his father’s huff loud and clear, making Kody crack up while Ace’s brows snapped together in a deep frown.

“Well, that’s fucking stupid, ain’t it?” Dad said.

“Honey,” his mom snapped.

“Stupid? Yeah.” Ace looked at Kody, catching his gaze and staring into his eyes. “But if I hadn’t, I wouldn’t have met Kody.”

Yep. Losing Ace would definitely hurt more than losing Ruben. Like a lot more.

Ace

He’d expected Kody’s parents to be horrible, though that was mostly on him for assuming the worst. Not that he could help it. He wanted to hurt anyone who treated Kody badly.

When Kody’s mom?Addy?had invited them both over for dinner next week, he’d hurried to say yes before Kody could decline. Addy had been ecstatic and Kody, fortunately, hadn’t been mad.

He knew Kody had said there couldn’t be anything serious between them, but it already felt like there was, and he’d be lying if he said he didn’t want this relationship to be real. He didn’t know what it was about Kody, but he made him want a whole lot of things he’d never even thought about before.

Kody sat down at the other end of the couch and turned toward Ace.

“So, now you know way too much about me. How about you tell me more about you?”

He would but, first, Kody was way too far away.

He moved down the couch so he could pull Kody’s legs into his lap. Kody pressed his lips together and Ace knew he was trying to hide his smile because he wasn’t succeeding at all.

“I was raised by a single mother. My sperm donor left us when I was two. It’s just been Mom and me my whole life.”

“She did a good job,” Kody said, making Ace’s heart soar.

“She did, huh?”

Kody nodded, hand covering the one Ace had on his leg.

“You’re pretty amazing.”

That was the opposite of what he’d heard most of his life, but he assumed Kody was biased. He’d never had any complains about his dick, after all.

“Your parents did well with you,” Ace said with a smile, then deadpanned, “Not so much your sisters.”

Kody threw his head back with a laugh that gave Ace butterflies.

“Just Amanda,” Kody said. “I thought Olivia was solely on her and Ruben’s side, but she defended me yesterday. Told Amanda that she was the only one drinking the Ruben Kool-Aid.”

Ace nodded slowly. “I think I like Olivia.”

“Me, too. I guess it’s hard being the youngest. Amanda has always strung her along to everything she wanted while me and Katelynn were too busy being teenagers and getting into trouble.”

“How many sisters you got?”

“Three. I’m the oldest. Katelynn’s one year younger than me. She’s married and she’s got two rambunctious kids. There’s five years between me and Amanda and one between her and Olivia.”

“Three sisters?” Ace shook his head. “Makes me glad that I’m an only child.”

Kody chuckled and said, “Sometimes I wish I were, too, though I still love my sisters. Even when they’re awful.”

“I get that,” Ace said, a smile spreading on his lips. “That sibling bond? Family? That’s what drew me to my club. It got fucked up for a while, but we’ve been good for a few years now.”
