“I’m way too fucking smart for his sorry ass,” she snapped.

“Wow. All I’m hearing is a whole lotta denial.”

“Whatever,” she said with a sigh. “He can fuck whoever he wants.”

She turned her back on the guys, arms crossed, and her jaw clenched tight. Kody looked up just in time to see Ollie staring at her longingly.

Those two needed to get their shit together and just fuck each other. He sure as hell didn’t want to be in their shoes. Why they were fighting it, he didn’t know. Maybe fear of losing a friend if things didn’t work out? That he could understand. While he and Ace hadn’t started out as friends before getting together, he couldn’t imagine not seeing the man every day.

His shift ended at five p.m. and then Ace would come over. He’d stayed over last night and they’d both left for work at shit o’clock in the morning so it had only been a few hours since he’d last seen him and yet he missed the hell out of him.

When the alarm sounded, Cora turned on her heels and ran toward the truck and, with a sigh, he followed.

They’d already been out on five calls, not including the two false alarms, and while most of their actual calls had been small stuff, it didn’t bode well for how busy the rest of their day would be.

He toed off his sneakers, then jumped into his boots and pulled up his pants. He grabbed his jacket off the truck and got into his seat, putting on his headset. With the sirens on and everyone in the truck, Finn got them out of there fast.

This shift couldn’t be over soon enough.

Ace

He’d always loved coming home after a long day at work but these past few weeks, he’d barely been home. He’d been with Kody every second he could. Kody made him smile. All day long, really. Just a single thought of the man had him grinning to himself. So much so that his brothers had given him confused and worried looks all day at work.

He’d taken off his work clothes and grabbed a fresh pair of jeans and a T-shirt to put on after his shower, hurrying to get dressed because he couldn’t wait to see Kody.

He dumped his dirty clothes into his laundry basket, sending his mom a silent thank you for still washing his clothes even though she’d taught him how to do it when he was eight. She was still the only one who could get bad stains out of his clothes. He didn’t know what kind of magic she used, but he was grateful. Especially because he often came home with stains he couldn’t explain how he’d gotten.

He grabbed some clean clothes and tossed them into his overnight bag, cramming in as many clothes as he could, then picked up the bag and headed downstairs. He heard the front door open and close and cursed under his breath.

“Hi, Honey.”

He stepped into the kitchen where his mom was unpacking a bag of groceries. He dropped his bag on the floor and gave her an awkward smile.

“Oh, hi Mom.”

She narrowed her eyes at him. “You moving out or something?”

“Uh…” he trailed off, blinking at her in surprise. “No?”

“Was that a question or an answer?”

He worried his bottom lip for a moment, then put down his bag.

“I kinda met someone,” he said.

The nerves were starting to hit him because if there was one person he needed to like Kody, it was his mom.

“Yes, I gathered as much from that lovely conversation we had,” Mom said, crossing her arms and leaning back against the counter. “Now, when do I get to meet him?”

“Soon. I hope.”

“Uh-huh. Any particular reason you’re keeping him from me? Or are you keeping me from him?” she asked, brow raised, and her head cocked to the side.

“I…” he let out a breath and shook his head. “I’m just worried I’ll fuck it up and I don’t want to let you down. Or let him down.”

Mom pushed away from the counter and opened her arms. He stepped into her embrace and rested his cheek on top of her head.

“You’re gonna fuck up, honey. That’s what people do.”
