He pulled back to scowl at her. “Thanks, Mom?”

She shook her head and put a hand on his chest.

“We all make mistakes, baby. It’s how we deal with the fallout that matters. If this boy can’t handle it, perhaps it’s better for you to not be together. It wouldn’t be fair to either of you.”

“What if I can’t handle it?”

She looked up at him with that soft loving look she always gave him whenever he doubted himself.

“Then you tell him. Be honest?”

“But never cruel,” he finished for her.

She nodded and took a step back. “You’ll be alright.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“I still wanna meet this young man.”

“Soon, Mom. Soon.”

She pointed a finger at him and said, “I’m holding you to that.”

He had no doubt she would.

Kody

The second night shift showed up, he was dropping his things off in the locker room and taking off toward his car, waving over his shoulder at the others.

He didn’t live far from the fire house, but it sure felt like it. He couldn’t wait to wrap his arms around Ace. Couldn’t wait to kiss him.

He pulled into his driveway, his heartrate picking up the second he saw Ace there leaning on his bike. Honestly, was there anything hotter than a man with a motorcycle?

He unclipped his seatbelt and got out of the car, heading straight for Ace who straightened, a wide smile on his lips.

“Hey,” Ace said. “How was your day?”

“Hectic,” Kody said.

Ace wrapped his arms around him, and he melted against the man, face pressed into the side of his neck. He even smelled good. How was that fair?

“Wanna order takeout and cuddle on the couch?”

“I would love that,” Ace said.

Kody pulled back to meet Ace’s gaze.

“We can make out on the couch, too,” he said with a teasing smile and put a hand on Ace’s chest to stop him when he leaned in. “I need a shower first, though.”

He hadn’t as much as changed clothes before getting in his car.

Ace chuckled and cupped Kody’s face in his hands, lowering his head to press their lips together.

“I don’t care,” Ace said against his lips.

“Then take me inside.”

He was grinning as Ace grabbed his hand and practically towed him inside. If just seeing the man could make him this happy, he couldn’t wait to see what more time with him would do.
