“Ace, are you okay?” he asked the biker still partially in Kody’s lap.

Oh.

His name was Ace.

He would’ve facepalmed but his hands were busy holding onto Ace.

“I’m fine,” Ace said.

The other biker gave Ace a light slap to the shoulder.

“You’re such a fucking dumbass.”

Two other bikers were walking up to them while Ollie returned with Cora in tow.

“Someone should revoke your license,” one of the bikers said with a grin at Ace while the other grunted in what seemed to be agreement.

Ace flipped them off.

“Fuck you.”

“Move,” Cora snapped, placing her bag on the ground next to them. She glanced at Kody. “You okay?”

“I think we both are. The bike took the brunt of it.”

Ace gasped, then sputtered out, “Oh, shit.”

Ace

He’d done it again.

At least he was in one piece this time. Not that it was that much of a comfort considering his bike very much wasn’t.

“My baby,” he cried out and tried to push off the ground.

Hands on his chest kept him in place and when he turned his head to look at the firefighter again, his heart did this weird fluttery thing. Was this what a heart attack felt like?

“Pulse is elevated but nothing alarming all things considered,” the doctor lady said with a shrug and released Ace’s wrist.

“What if it’s a heart attack?”

“I’ll give you a heart attack,” she deadpanned.

The firefighter holding him snorted out a laugh that made his heart do that thing again. Strange. Very strange.

He shifted so he wasn’t completely pressed up against the guy and could see him. He still had his hands on Ace’s arms, a wry smile on his lips. He had coppery red hair that curled a bit. His eyes were brown. A soft, warm brown. He had a few freckles strewn across his nose and for whatever reason, he found himself staring at them, counting them.

Before he could embarrass himself any further, he cleared his throat and said, “I’m Ace.”

The guy gave him a weird look he couldn’t read, but he was also smiling. Was it not customary to introduce yourself to the man who’d just saved your life? He knew his mom would rip him a new one if he didn’t.

“Kody,” he said and let go of Ace to stand up. “Alright, big guy. Let’s get you up.”

He took Kody’s hand and let the man pull him to his feet. When Kody let go, he could still feel the man’s hand on him like a phantom touch. A burning, electric touch.

“Did I hit my head?”

Kody frowned at him, then grabbed his helmet off the ground.
