When he nodded, she seemed to relax a bit.

In truth, they did save people from locked doors much more than they saved people from fires. He wasn’t complaining, though. Fire rescues were some of the most dangerous parts of his job. A day without a fire was a good day.

“I’m sorry about the door,” he said and cringed as he looked at it.

They’d had to go at it pretty hard. The damned thing was older than him. Much heavier, too. It hadn’t budged whatsoever.

“I don’t think I wanna close it anytime soon, anyway,” she said.

“I get that.”

Being stuck in there with her kid alone in the other room and no way to get to him couldn’t have been fun.

“This is Cora,” he said and motioned toward her. “She’s just gonna look you over to make sure you’re okay.”

He gave Gina a nod and ruffled the kid’s hair before heading for the front door. He found Ollie there and followed him down the front steps and as they headed toward the truck, he asked, “Who’s on dinner duty tonight?”

“Finn and Dennis,” Ollie said, making Kody groan.

“Shit. Food poisoning incom?”

The roaring of motorcycles had them turning their heads. Someone was making donuts down the road. Kody met Ollie’s gaze and they both shook their heads.

There were lots of bikers in the city and they were always the ones who saw how badly their little stunts ended when they weren’t careful. He understood them wanting to have fun out on their bikes, but these guys drove like asshole sometimes.

He continued toward the front of the truck, thinking to himself that he needed to raid the fridge when they got back to the firehouse so he wouldn’t have to eat whatever disgusting mess Finn and Dennis came up with for dinner. Why Cap let those two near their food, he didn’t know.

“Has he not seen us?”

Kody looked at Ollie, then glanced over his shoulder at the bike that was now headed straight for their firetruck.

“What the fuck?” he said under his breath.

The biker was doing a wheelie so he probably couldn’t see shit. Kody waved his arms in the air and shouted but it made no difference.

“Ah, shit.”

Ollie was already headed for the car door and when he honked the truck’s horn, the bike swerved, then the front wheel landed on the road and the biker seemed to realize he was two seconds away from crashing straight into the truck.

The bike turned, hitting the asphalt, the bike and rider both sliding across the road. The bike crashed into the truck, the sound of crushing metal loud. Kody threw himself down to catch the biker before he followed suit.

Despite being in full gear, his knees still protested as they hit the ground hard, but he managed to grab the biker by his upper body. They slid a few feet before coming to a stop.

Kody blew out a breath and pushed up the visor on the biker’s helmet. A pair of dark blue eyes stared into his.

“Where the hell did you come from?” the guy asked, wonder in his voice.

Kody got interrupted before he could answer.

“Ace,” someone yelled.

Kody snapped his head up, anger flooding him as he saw a bunch of bikers pulling up in front of them.

“What the fuck?” he growled at them.

If they thought he’d aced that, they were a bunch of assholes. He nearly got himself killed.

One guy got off his bike and ran to them. He landed on his knees next to them and pulled off his helmet.
